Although Rashford remains widely expected to leave Old Trafford this summer, his proposed permanent switch to Barcelona collapsed after the Catalan club decided against activating their £26 million purchase option. Instead, the La Liga champions invested heavily in Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, reportedly spending around £70 million to secure his signature.
The development has significantly narrowed Rashford’s immediate options. According to reports from The Athletic, the 28-year-old has no interest in joining Tottenham Hotspur or any other Premier League club this summer. His preference is to continue his career abroad rather than represent one of Manchester United’s domestic rivals.
Manchester United, meanwhile, are understood to be keen on resolving Rashford’s future with a permanent transfer rather than sanctioning another loan spell. However, the club are yet to receive serious interest from overseas teams capable of matching both the player’s ambitions and his substantial wage demands.
During his loan spell in Spain, Barcelona reportedly covered Rashford’s £375,000-per-week salary in full. With that agreement now over, United will once again assume responsibility for his wages from July 1 unless a new transfer is agreed.
Despite growing speculation, The Sun reports that Manchester United are not rushing into a decision regarding Rashford’s future. The club have also not ruled out the possibility of reintegrating him into the first-team squad if a suitable move fails to materialise before the transfer window closes.
Tottenham are believed to be among the clubs willing to meet Rashford’s salary demands, but the forward has shown little enthusiasm for discussing a move to North London or elsewhere within England.
Amid the uncertainty, Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has voiced his support for his long-time teammate, expressing hope that Rashford can still play an important role at Old Trafford.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Maguire said: “I’ve had a fantastic relationship with Marcus over the years and we’ve shared some great moments together.
“I know exactly how talented he is. Ultimately, it’s up to Marcus and the club to reach a decision that works for everyone.
“If he comes back, we all want to see him enjoying his football, playing with confidence and performing at his best. It has to be the right outcome for both him and the club.
“Everyone knows the quality Marcus possesses, and whichever club he represents next season will be getting an exceptional player if he’s at his best.”
For now, Rashford’s future remains unresolved, with a move overseas still his preferred destination as Manchester United weigh up their next steps ahead of the new campaign.
