Leeds United captain Ethan Ampadu and striker Joel Piroe have hit back at pundit Jamie Carragher after his heated pre-match remarks before their game against AFC Bournemouth.

Speaking on live TV before kickoff, Carragher boldly predicted a 3-1 defeat for Leeds, questioning their mindset, tactical setup, and ability to cope under pressure. His comments soon went viral, drawing backlash from fans—and, more notably, from inside the Leeds dressing room.

Though Ampadu had already shown signs of frustration before the match, both he and Piroe made their feelings unmistakably clear after the final whistle, especially following Leeds’ thrilling 2-2 comeback at the Vitality Stadium.

“He said we’d lose 3-1 and made it sound like we had no fight,” Ampadu said. “That’s football for you—people talk like they know everything. But honestly, some of those comments were just foolish.”

The Welsh captain’s response made immediate headlines, but Piroe’s support added even more force. The Dutch forward echoed his skipper’s anger, making it clear the squad had taken Carragher’s words to heart.

“We heard what was said,” Piroe admitted. “You can criticize—that’s part of football—but there’s a way to do it. Writing us off like that? It’s disrespectful. We showed today that we’re not the team people think we are.”

On the pitch, Leeds responded with a gritty, determined display. Twice they fell behind, and twice they fought back—first through a Bournemouth own goal, then a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer from Sean Longstaff in the 90+7th minute.

That late goal not only earned a valuable point but also served as a powerful rebuttal to Carragher’s prediction. Far from crumbling as expected, Leeds showed resilience and poise under pressure—the very qualities that had been publicly doubted.

For Ampadu, the performance was about more than just the result. “People can keep doubting us if they want,” he said. “We’ll just keep proving them wrong.”

In the end, Leeds didn’t take all three points, but they made something equally important: a statement of intent. And in doing so, they ensured Carragher’s prediction didn’t go unanswered—both on the pitch and off it.
