Tottenham outmaneuver Man United for Fernandes
On Tuesday evening, David Ornstein reported that Tottenham had clinched the signing with a straight £85m bid for the West Ham midfielder. United, however, felt the total cost—both fee and wages—was beyond what they were prepared to spend, and will now shift focus elsewhere.
The transfer makes Fernandes Spurs’ new record arrival, surpassing the £65m paid for Dominic Solanke in 2024. It also appears to signal the Lewis Family acting on their promises to supporters.
In a recent open letter, the owners stated: “We also take responsibility for rebuilding Spurs. Our ambition is to recapture the spirit of the Club and bring back the excitement, the fearlessness and the bold football we have always felt defined us. That means football comes first. The Board and Executive team have laid out their plans to meet this ambition.
“This will require investment – in our teams, the academy, our backroom functions and more – and we are fully committed to this. We are not selling the Club. We are all in. We are investing in it. You will see more of this in the coming months.
“We care deeply about Spurs. The rebuild the Club needs, and you deserve, has begun. The change required is deep. It will take time and commitment, but change is happening. We know that actions will speak louder than words.”
Romano gives transfer his ‘here we go’
Fabrizio Romano quickly echoed Ornstein’s update, offering his trademark ‘here we go’ confirmation on the Fernandes deal. The Italian journalist added that Tottenham will pay a fully guaranteed £85m fixed fee for the Portuguese midfielder.
Fernandes is set to become Tottenham’s fifth summer signing, following the arrivals of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke, and Martin Dubravka.
