Scottish football has been rocked by a fierce outburst from Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou, who launched a scathing attack on the Scottish Football Association after his side’s heartbreaking 3–2 loss to Celtic.
In what is being called one of the most explosive post-match interviews of the season, Askou accused the governing body of doing “everything possible” to hand Celtic the league title, claiming that no club can “ever beat Celtic” because the system is rigged against them.
“You can never win against Celtic,” an angry Askou said after the final whistle. “The SFA will not allow you. Every season it’s the same story. They are doing everything to make them champions.”
His comments instantly set social media ablaze and ignited fierce debate across Scottish football.
The match itself was full of drama. Elliot Watt fired Motherwell ahead in the 17th minute, sending the home fans into raptures. Celtic hit back through Daizen Maeda and Benjamin Nygren to turn the game around. Liam Gordon appeared to have snatched a point for Motherwell with an 85th-minute equalizer, but deep into stoppage time, Kelechi Iheanacho converted a contentious late penalty to seal a 3–2 win for Celtic, leaving Motherwell devastated.
It was that penalty decision that pushed Askou over the edge. The Motherwell boss believed the call was “soft” and argued that similar decisions always seem to go Celtic’s way at critical moments in the title race.
“We fight, we score, we give everything,” Askou continued. “Then one decision changes the entire match again. How many times are clubs supposed to accept this?”
The interview quickly became the biggest talking point in Scottish football. Motherwell fans largely backed their manager, insisting smaller clubs are routinely treated unfairly when they face giants like Celtic. Many felt the late penalty robbed them of what could have been a famous result.
Celtic supporters, however, reacted furiously to the accusations, dismissing them as bitter excuses. Some pointed out that Celtic created more chances throughout the game and deserved the win, penalty controversy aside.
Pundits across Scotland also weighed in. Some admitted the penalty call would be debated for days, while others warned that openly accusing the SFA of bias is an extremely serious charge that could lead to disciplinary action.
The SFA has yet to issue an official response, but pressure is mounting. Many expect the governing body to investigate Askou’s remarks for bringing the game into disrepute.
For Celtic, the victory keeps their title charge on track. For Motherwell, it’s a bitter cocktail of anger, frustration, and controversy. One thing is certain: this match will not be remembered just for the football. Askou’s explosive allegations have turned a thrilling five-goal spectacle into one of the biggest controversies Scottish football has seen this season.
