Tel experienced a dramatic evening on Monday, brilliantly putting Spurs ahead just after half-time with a long-range strike. However, he later gave away a reckless penalty by catching Leeds’ Ethan Ampadu with a high boot while attempting an overhead clearance.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin made no mistake from the spot, and Sean Longstaff nearly snatched a late winner for Leeds, but the match ended level.
The single point leaves Tottenham just two points above the relegation zone with two games remaining. Carragher criticised Tel’s “really poor decision” on Sky Sports, noting that the forward had time to change his mind after spotting the oncoming opponent.
He called it a “crazy decision” and pointed out that Tel also risked gifting Leeds a goal in the first half with another careless action.
Carragher acknowledged that De Zerbi would be angry, but also reminded that Tel is a young attacker who has made a big impact for Spurs recently—helping secure a win at Wolves and setting up a goal at Villa before scoring against Leeds.
He added that managing such highs and lows is part of the art of management, something De Zerbi understands well.
Fortunately for Tottenham, goalkeeper Kinsky provided a crucial moment with what Carragher described as “one of the saves of the season” to deny Longstaff in stoppage time.
Carragher praised Kinsky’s resilience after a disastrous performance against Atletico Madrid earlier in the season, saying few would have expected him to play for Spurs again. He added that the save could prove decisive in keeping the club in the Premier League.
