Bolton Wanderers, Oxford United and Plymouth Argyle among sides keen on defender
Championship and League One clubs circling Bromley defender Omar Sowunmi
Omar Sowunmi, the experienced centre-back who has been a mainstay for Bromley over several seasons, could be heading for a summer exit as interest from higher-division clubs intensifies.
According to journalist Pete O’Rourke (via X), Bolton Wanderers and Plymouth Argyle are among the sides tracking the towering defender. Both clubs are embroiled in promotion battles to reach the Championship and could even face each other in the play-offs, depending on how the season concludes. Bolton are currently third in League One, eight points adrift of the automatic promotion places, while Plymouth are pushing hard to break into the top six.
Though their immediate focus is on the pitch, recruitment plans for the upcoming transfer window are already taking shape behind the scenes. O’Rourke reports that Bolton and Plymouth are just two of several clubs keen on the 6’6” defender. Oxford United, currently in the Championship, have also shown interest, alongside Barnsley. In Scotland, Aberdeen are believed to be monitoring the 30-year-old’s situation.
Sowunmi’s career path
Sowunmi began his senior career in Ipswich Town’s academy between 2014 and 2015 but never made a first-team appearance. He moved to Yeovil Town in 2015, spending four seasons there and making 69 league appearances, scoring three goals. During the 2018–19 campaign, he served as club captain in League Two.
In 2019, he returned to his hometown club Colchester United for an undisclosed fee, making 22 appearances over two seasons. He joined Bromley in 2021 and enjoyed a productive spell, with 67 appearances and 10 goals – a notable return for a defender, highlighting his aerial ability.
He spent the 2023–24 season at Sutton United (35 appearances, four goals) before rejoining Bromley in July 2024 ahead of their League Two campaign. As of the 2025–26 season, he remains a key member of the squad.
What’s next for Bolton and Plymouth?
Both sides face a demanding run of fixtures as they push for promotion. Bolton travel to Rotherham United before hosting Doncaster Rovers, then visit Port Vale and later face Stevenage (though international call-ups could affect that match). April begins with a crucial trip to Home Park to take on Plymouth – a potentially decisive clash in the promotion race.
Plymouth, meanwhile, travel to Reading before successive home games against Stevenage and Huddersfield Town. A trip to Bradford City follows, ahead of that pivotal home clash with Bolton at the start of April.
With the play-off race entering a critical phase, both clubs know that a strong run of results could make all the difference to their promotion ambitions.
