Speculation continues to swirl around the future of Spurs full-back Djed Spence.
The 25-year-old was part of a Tottenham squad that narrowly avoided relegation last season. After an uneven campaign, he turned heads with composed performances for England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and his displays across North America have not gone unnoticed by a number of clubs.
Inter Milan moved early in the summer to try and prise Spence away, but those plans were quickly shut down by Tottenham’s firm asking price.
Back in the Premier League, both Liverpool and Manchester United have been tracking the defender, who appears open to leaving N17 in search of regular game time.
Fabrizio Romano clarifies Liverpool links
Despite helping England secure a third-place finish at the World Cup, Spence looks set to struggle for minutes at Spurs, with new signing Andy Robertson favoured on the left and Pedro Porro locked in on the right. As a result, Tottenham are willing to field proposals and have slapped a £35 million price tag on the player.
However, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has poured cold water on talk of a move to Liverpool. Though the Reds have been frequently mentioned as suitors, Romano insists he has been told there is no substance to the rumours.
“Djed Spence, at the moment, I don’t have any concrete information on Liverpool, to be honest,” Romano said on the Market Madness podcast.
“So, let’s see if they will jump into the race. But at the moment, I’m told there is not something concrete between Djed Spence and Liverpool so far.”
Late Anfield move still possible
Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola has endured a difficult pre-season on the injury front. Virgil van Dijk is being carefully managed after World Cup duty, Joe Gomez picked up an issue in the opening friendly, and new recruit Jeremy Jacquet has yet to feature following a shoulder injury sustained at Rennes. Meanwhile, Conor Bradley remains sidelined after last season’s serious knee injury, leaving Iraola short on right-back options ahead of the new campaign.
Even so, the Merseyside club are not currently pursuing Spence. His versatility across both full-back positions adds to his appeal, and while Romano has poured cold water on Liverpool’s interest for now, there remains a chance they could make a late move before the window closes.
Tottenham will need to be prepared for that possibility.
