Alan Shearer shares what was different about ‘absolutely outstanding’ Tottenham in Aston Villa win

Alan Shearer has shared his thoughts on Tottenham Hotspur’s crucial 2-1 victory over Aston Villa, a result that lifted the Lilywhites out of the relegation zone.

The win was a massive one in the battle to avoid the drop, and it piles the pressure on West Ham ahead of the upcoming matches.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side looked far more competitive at Villa Park, showing genuine desire to claim the three points.

Although Villa’s squad rotation may have worked in Spurs’ favour, the effort shown on Sunday night was still commendable.

Tottenham’s renewed sense of purpose against Aston Villa didn’t go unnoticed by Shearer.

What did Alan Shearer notice about Tottenham’s display?

For the first time since the opening two games of the season, Spurs have now secured back-to-back Premier League wins.

They knew they had to dig deep to escape the bottom three, and De Zerbi’s men rose to the occasion.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Shearer highlighted what made the difference: “They don’t win the first header, but they win that second ball. That was constant throughout the game, and it gave them the platform to play and create chances.

“Again, look at how many players they push forward. They were brave, aggressive, and absolutely outstanding. They deserved to win.”

Shearer’s analysis is spot on. Tottenham played like a team determined to win, and that mindset was clear from the first whistle.

After the lacklustre performances seen for much of the season, this was a breath of fresh air. According to Sofascore, Spurs had 55% possession. They also completed more tackles (23 to Villa’s 19) and more interceptions (10 to Villa’s 5).

The aggression and grit Shearer mentioned are reflected in the duel statistics too: Spurs won 51% of duels compared to Villa’s 49%, a slim but telling margin.

De Zerbi deserves credit for Spurs’ revival

Two wins in a row marks a significant turnaround for Tottenham this season, and De Zerbi deserves praise for the impact he’s made in his short time in charge.

The Italian coach has Spurs playing with an attacking intent that has often been missing, and no player looked like they were hiding.

Since taking over, De Zerbi has earned 58% of the available points. If Tottenham maintain that rate, they would finish the season on 42 points.

That means West Ham would likely need to win at least two of their final three games and get a result in the other, especially with Spurs currently holding a superior goal difference.

Tottenham face Leeds United on 11 May, and the Elland Road side are not yet mathematically safe from relegation.

It promises to be another must-win match—but at this stage of the season, every remaining game already feels that way.
