Tottenham fans will hate what one football expert has just suggested
A European football expert has suggested that a Tottenham star who has underperformed this season could flourish at Arsenal.
Clubs across Europe are circling Tottenham’s top players, with many eyeing cut-price deals if the Lilywhites fail to maintain their Premier League status. Experts have noted that Spurs may need to offload several of their highest earners following relegation, as they would be unable to sustain a large wage bill in the Championship.
It has now been proposed that one of Tottenham’s marquee players might cross the North London divide if Roberto De Zerbi’s men are relegated.
Arsenal urged to swoop for Xavi Simons if Tottenham go down
European football expert Andy Brassell believes Xavi Simons is likely to join another Premier League club this summer should Tottenham lose their top-flight status. He suggested the 22-year-old could shine at the Emirates Stadium if he followed in Sol Campbell’s footsteps by moving to the red half of North London.
Asked where Simons might end up if Spurs are relegated, Brassell told talkSPORT: “There’s a high chance of him staying in the Premier League, I would think. I looked at the sort of club that could use him. Obviously he was close to Chelsea before, but it’s hard to know what Chelsea’s plan is in the medium or short term.
“I think Newcastle really need a number ten. He’d be great for them. I actually think he could be pretty good for Arsenal. But people would react negatively to that – probably both Tottenham and Arsenal fans, given the season he and Spurs have had.
“The other issue with him being an Arsenal player – aside from the obvious – is that he would block the path for Ethan Nwaneri, who hasn’t had the loan spell he would have wanted at Marseille so far. But someone that dynamic, who can create and score at a high tempo, is a fit for the Premier League. He would be good for any number of teams in the top part of the table.”
Spurs’ struggles blamed for Simons’ poor season
After struggling to make an impact in his first few months in the Premier League, Simons has shown his quality for Tottenham in recent months. Brassell said he sympathises with the Dutchman’s situation, arguing that Spurs’ difficulties have slowed his adaptation to English football.
The journalist added: “Xavi Simons is about to turn 23. He has all the ability in the world. There have been times at RB Leipzig when he was the best player in the Bundesliga – not the whole time, but for short spells.
“Someone who could take a game by the scruff of the neck, who was incredibly hard-working, could score, create, and go past players. I have some sympathy for his situation this season because he’s joining a Tottenham side that isn’t particularly great, to be fair.
“He’s adapting to the Premier League. Magic is expected of him, but he hasn’t been given time to adapt because he’s been substituted quite often, even recently.
“Look, people will say it’s about performances and Spurs need results. But I really think he’s been a victim of the circumstances. They haven’t been able to give him time to truly develop. And he’s shown, especially in the Champions League, that he has the ability to do it.”
