‘Not good news’ – Arsenal legend explains why he wants Tottenham to avoid ‘shocking’ Premier League relegation
Arsenal legend Lauren has openly admitted he wants to see Tottenham avoid a “shocking” relegation from the Premier League, despite the bitter rivalry between the two north London clubs. The former defender argues that England’s top flight would be poorer without its most iconic derby.
De Zerbi’s survival mission
The atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is growing increasingly dire as the club edges closer to the Championship. Newly appointed manager Roberto De Zerbi, who replaced Igor Tudor, has been brought in to orchestrate a desperate rescue act—but results have yet to improve under the Italian.
Spurs remain winless in the league throughout 2026, a stark statistic that highlights the scale of the challenge facing the former Brighton boss. Their latest setback came in a 2-2 draw with De Zerbi’s old side Brighton, where a late collapse cost them two precious points in their fight for survival.
Derby days over the drop
While many Arsenal fans are taking pleasure in seeing Tottenham stuck in the relegation zone, Lauren has offered a different perspective. The former Cameroon international believes losing the north London derby from the fixture list would harm both the Gunners and the league as a whole.
“As an Arsenal fan, there’s one game we want to see every single season—the north London derby against Tottenham,” Lauren told CasinoWizard. “It’s good to play your biggest rivals every year. I don’t think Tottenham going down would be good news for Arsenal supporters or the Premier League in general. It’s good to face them and beat them, and I want that to continue. Tottenham’s relegation would be a huge shock to the Premier League, but ideally, I’d see them stay up so we can take points off them again next season.”
Title race vs. relegation scrap
While Tottenham are nervously watching the bottom of the table, Arsenal are locked in a tense battle for the title at the top. Mikel Arteta’s side currently hold a three-point lead over Manchester City, though Pep Guardiola’s men have a crucial game in hand after beating the Gunners 2-1 at the Etihad.
Even with mounting pressure on Arteta to deliver the club’s first league championship in over two decades, Lauren remains convinced the Spaniard is the right man for the job regardless of the outcome. “All the talk about Arteta being at risk and Arsenal not winning trophies needs to stop,” he added. “I don’t see it that way because I believe Arsenal are going to win the Premier League. I’m positive and confident. Losing to Manchester City hasn’t ended the title race. City weren’t the better team—they aren’t—they just took their chances.”
Five games to save Spurs
With just five matches left in the season, there is no room left for error for De Zerbi and Tottenham. The Italian has publicly urged his squad to stay positive, warning that he has no time for “negative people” as they prepare for a season-defining trip to Wolves.
Despite the grim reality of the league table, De Zerbi remains defiant about his team’s chances of survival. “We have five more games—it’s tough, and every one of us knows this is a difficult moment—but there are 15 points left, and this team is capable of winning five in a row,” the manager insisted.
