Tottenham Hotspur are currently fighting to avoid relegation, and new head coach Roberto De Zerbi has yet to make a meaningful impact since his arrival.
The Italian took over earlier this month on a five-year contract, having been identified as the club’s top choice for the permanent role. However, his first match in charge ended in defeat to Sunderland, leaving Spurs two points from safety with just six games remaining.
The North London side has been plagued by serious injuries throughout the season, but reports suggest De Zerbi has already made a decision on one player’s future beyond the current campaign.
Tottenham Open to Selling Thomas Frank Signing
According to Football Insider, Tottenham may be willing to part ways with midfielder Conor Gallagher—just months after he joined in a £40 million deal during the January transfer window. Gallagher was one of Thomas Frank’s final signings before the latter was sacked.
Despite being described as “unbelievable,” the England international has struggled to make an impact. Former scout Mick Brown claims De Zerbi and Spurs are now ready to let him go.
“It hasn’t worked out at all well for Gallagher at Tottenham,” Brown said. “Sometimes that happens. He’s come into a difficult situation and for one reason or another, he’s struggled to make a real difference.
Maybe questions should have been asked about why he wasn’t a regular at Atlético Madrid and why they were willing to let him go. But Gallagher will always attract interest from Premier League clubs because of his attributes.
Tottenham could look to cash in at the end of the season, admit it hasn’t worked out, and try to recoup their money. Even if they stay up, his performances this season haven’t suggested he has a big future at the club, so moving on might be best. As I say, there will be clubs willing to take him, so it’s a real possibility.”
Gallagher Signing Always Raised Questions
While Frank wanted to strengthen his midfield to avoid a relegation battle, Gallagher always seemed an awkward fit for the squad.
With De Zerbi now in charge, Gallagher’s lack of technical quality has become even more apparent. It’s little surprise that all parties may be exploring an exit, despite the player being early into a long-term contract.
Even if Spurs avoid relegation, a major squad overhaul is needed—and recouping Gallagher’s fee, while acting as if the move never happened, might be the best outcome for everyone involved.
