“I don’t understand the rules anymore” — Former Tottenham manager goes wild in frustration over refereeing decisions as tension grows in the relegation battle, amid huge demands over a DISALLOWED Goal and growing speculation about Premier League favoritism toward Tottenham
Nuno Espírito Santo has urged the Premier League to offer clearer guidance on set-piece rules after West Ham United were controversially denied a dramatic late equaliser against Arsenal.
The Hammers suffered a painful 1-0 defeat at the London Stadium, with Leandro Trossard’s strike proving the difference and leaving West Ham locked in a fierce fight to avoid the drop. They now trail 17th-placed Tottenham Hotspur by a single point, with Spurs still holding a game in hand along with home fixtures against Leeds and Everton still to come.
The outcome could have looked entirely different after West Ham believed they had snatched a stoppage-time leveller. Callum Wilson forced the ball over the line despite Declan Rice’s attempts to clear, triggering wild celebrations around the ground.
However, following a VAR check that stretched beyond four minutes, referee Chris Kavanagh disallowed the goal, ruling that Pablo had fouled David Raya during the frantic scramble inside the six-yard box.
The decision left Nuno visibly frustrated, with the Portuguese manager demanding greater consistency and openness from officials when it comes to set-piece situations.
“They have to sort this out,” Nuno said post-match. “They need to explain to clubs why something is a foul one week and not the next. Everyone is left confused.”
Rather than taking direct aim at the specific call, Nuno highlighted the broader issue of grappling and blocking at corners, arguing that similar incidents occur routinely across the Premier League without sanction. He noted that wrestling-style clashes inside the penalty area have become standard during set-pieces, making it increasingly hard for players, managers and even referees to know where the boundary lies.
“It’s the lack of consistency,” Nuno explained. “You see holding and blocking at almost every corner in the league. Sometimes it’s punished, sometimes it’s ignored. It’s difficult to understand where the line is drawn.”
On the other side, Mikel Arteta mounted a firm defence of the officials and insisted the right decision was ultimately reached after the lengthy review. Arteta credited both VAR and the referee for taking the necessary time to examine the incident thoroughly despite the feverish atmosphere inside the stadium.
“When you watch the incident properly, it’s a clear foul,” Arteta said. “The goal had to be ruled out.”
The Arsenal boss also acknowledged the huge pressure riding on the decision, given how much the result meant for both clubs at opposite ends of the table.
With tensions rising in the relegation scrap and frustration over VAR consistency growing, this latest contentious flashpoint is likely to add further fuel to the ongoing debate around officiating standards in the Premier League.
