Thomas Tuchel admits he now has greater “clarity” over his squad, but England national football team head toward the World Cup with lingering doubts following a disappointing run of results, capped by a lacklustre 1-0 defeat to Japan national football team.

Ahead of the tournament, Tuchel selected a 35-man squad for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, even splitting the group into two separate training camps in an unusual approach. However, Friday’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay—featuring mostly fringe players—did little to strengthen selection cases.

Plans to reintegrate key players for the Japan clash were disrupted by multiple withdrawals. Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, and John Stones all pulled out, while Harry Kane missed the match through injury and Jude Bellingham remained on the bench.
Despite dominating possession, England struggled to create meaningful chances against Japan, lacking sharpness and creativity. A first-half strike from Kaoru Mitoma secured a historic win for Japan.

Tuchel pointed to mitigating factors, highlighting the physical toll of club football and the number of injuries within the squad. He emphasized that while the results were disappointing, they reflected the demanding schedules players face at both domestic and European levels.

One major takeaway is the irreplaceable role of captain Harry Kane. With an outstanding season at Bayern Munich—scoring 48 goals in 40 games—his absence was clearly felt. Tuchel acknowledged that no team can replicate the same attacking threat without him.

Elsewhere, Bellingham enhanced his standing despite limited involvement, while Morgan Rogers showed flashes of promise in the number 10 role. However, Phil Foden and Cole Palmer failed to make a strong case for starting spots.

In midfield, Rice’s absence was noticeable, though Elliot Anderson impressed as a potential partner. Defensive concerns also surfaced, with Marc Guéhi and Ezri Konsa showing vulnerability, while the left-back position remains unresolved.

Although Tuchel insists he now has a clearer picture, uncertainty remains just weeks before squad selection. He admitted concerns about potential injuries in the coming weeks, stressing the importance of keeping players fit.

With time still on their side, Tuchel believes England can regroup, learn from this camp, and head into the World Cup with renewed focus as they chase their long-awaited global triumph.
