Barcelona plotting shock move for Tottenham star who’s struggling under Roberto De Zerbi

Lucas Bergvall’s limited role at Tottenham Hotspur is drawing interest from several of Europe’s top clubs, with Barcelona among those monitoring the 20-year-old Swedish international, sources have told TEAMtalk.

The midfielder, who only last month signed a new long-term contract running until 2031, has struggled to secure regular starting opportunities under Roberto De Zerbi.

Competition from summer signings Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes has limited him to just a handful of Premier League appearances this season. That situation has reignited outside interest and kept leading clubs tracking his progress.

Barcelona have renewed their long-standing admiration for the player. The Catalan club monitored Bergvall closely while he was still at Djurgården in 2024, only to lose out to Tottenham in the race for his signature.

Sources indicate they are once again evaluating him as a potential midfield addition, appreciating his technical quality, athleticism and versatility across multiple midfield roles.

The Swede is regarded as a long-term prospect who could develop into a key figure for Barcelona, who already boast outstanding young midfielders such as Pedri, Marc Bernal and Gavi.

However, Barca face competition, with multiple clubs looking to capitalise on Bergvall’s situation at Tottenham.

Barcelona joined by Napoli and Juventus in Bergvall pursuit

Napoli have also added Bergvall to their list of midfield targets.

The Serie A side are assessing options amid possible changes in central midfield and view the Tottenham man as a profile that suits their needs. Italian sources say they are following his situation closely.

A move to Naples would likely offer clearer opportunities for regular football than the intense competition for places at Barcelona.

Juventus, meanwhile, have shown the most concrete short-term interest, with sources stating they are keen to sign Bergvall on loan in January until the end of the season.

Midfield injuries have left the Turin club searching for reinforcements, and Bergvall is seen as a strong option. However, any deal would hinge on Tottenham’s willingness to let him leave temporarily—something the north London club have so far shown no desire to do.

Spurs remain in a strong position. Having persuaded Bergvall to stay and commit his future, they are reluctant to sanction a departure while he is still developing.

Whether interest from Barcelona, Napoli and Juventus develops into serious offers will depend on how much playing time the Swede receives in the coming months.
