Injured Nottingham Forest player’s recovery ‘progressing slowly’ – Expected return date revealed

Nottingham Forest defender player now continuing his recovery from the serious knee injury that has kept him sidelined since January, but his return to competitive action appears to have been delayed.

The Italian right-back joined Forest from Juventus in August 2025 in a deal worth around €13 million, with additional bonuses included in the agreement.

Savona quickly established himself as an important member of the Forest squad following his arrival at the City Ground. He featured in 20 matches and accumulated approximately 1,500 minutes, while also contributing two goals and two assists.

However, his promising first season was interrupted by injury. Savona suffered a significant knee problem, with his last appearance coming during Forest’s Europa League defeat against SC Braga on January 22.

Since then, the 23-year-old has remained unavailable and, as a result, is yet to make an appearance under current Forest manager Oliver Glasner.

Savona’s Recovery Has Been Slower Than Expected

Savona underwent surgery following the injury, but his rehabilitation has not gone entirely according to plan.

Glasner recently revealed that the defender had experienced complications during his recovery, raising concerns over when he would be able to return to first-team football.

Reports from Italy now suggest that Savona’s rehabilitation is progressing more slowly than initially anticipated. TuttoMercatoWeb has reported that the defender’s recovery has been moving at a cautious pace.

There had previously been expectations that Savona could return in October. However, with his rehabilitation taking longer than hoped, there is now uncertainty over whether he will actually be able to feature during the month.

Tutto Atalanta has also provided an update, claiming that returning to action in October remains Savona’s target. However, the defender has not yet been given a definitive date for his comeback.

Forest are understood to be taking no unnecessary risks with the player. Their priority is to ensure he fully recovers rather than rushing him back and potentially jeopardising his rehabilitation.

Injury Has Not Ended Transfer Interest

Savona’s injury has also previously been linked to interest from Serie A.

Reports covered by Sport Witness in August suggested that Atalanta had considered making a move for the Italian during the summer transfer window. Both TuttoMercatoWeb and Tutto Atalanta have also highlighted the club’s previous interest.

However, Atalanta’s position reportedly changed after Raoul Bellanova impressed during pre-season. The defender has subsequently become a regular under Maurizio Sarri, making it less likely that the Serie A club will return for Savona in the immediate future.

For now, Savona’s attention remains firmly on completing his recovery and returning to the pitch for Nottingham Forest.

Competition Awaits Savona

When Savona eventually returns, he could face a difficult battle to reclaim his place in Forest’s starting XI.

The club strengthened at right-back during the summer by signing Daniel Muñoz from Crystal Palace. The transfer also reunited the Colombian with Glasner, who previously managed him at Palace.

Muñoz’s arrival provides Forest with another strong option in the position and could make Savona’s route back into the starting lineup considerably more challenging.

For the moment, however, the priority for both Savona and Nottingham Forest is simple: ensure the Italian makes a full recovery before considering his return to competitive football.
