Sunderland suffered a dramatic 5-3 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, September 20, with the result leaving one of the Black Cats’ players facing criticism following a difficult afternoon.
Manchester City maintained their perfect Premier League start in an eight-goal thriller, with Enzo Fernández, Rayan Cherki, Antoine Semenyo and Erling Haaland finding the net for Enzo Maresca’s side.
Sunderland, however, refused to surrender and produced an impressive attacking response. Brian Brobbey scored a remarkable hat-trick, twice bringing the visitors level before completing his treble in the second half.
Despite Brobbey’s heroics, City eventually secured all three points when Haaland struck in the 81st minute to put the result beyond Sunderland’s reach. The Norwegian’s goal also meant he had now scored against every Premier League opponent he has faced.
The match nevertheless exposed weaknesses in Sunderland’s defensive organisation, with City repeatedly finding openings. Robin Roefs endured a particularly difficult evening in goal, conceding five times as Sunderland struggled to contain the hosts’ attacking quality.
Roefs was beaten at his near post for Fernández’s opening goal after the midfielder cleverly delivered his free-kick, while Semenyo later added two goals as City repeatedly regained the advantage.
The criticism surrounding the Sunderland star comes after a performance in which the Black Cats’ defensive unit was placed under enormous pressure. City registered five goals, although Sunderland also created enough opportunities to make the contest extremely uncomfortable for the hosts.
Sky Sports described the encounter as a chaotic eight-goal thriller, highlighting how Sunderland repeatedly exposed Manchester City’s defensive vulnerabilities despite ultimately losing the match.
Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris will nevertheless take encouragement from his team’s attacking display. Brobbey’s three goals demonstrated that Sunderland were capable of hurting one of the league’s strongest sides, while the visitors remained within one goal of City until Haaland’s late strike.
The defeat also underlined the fine margins facing Sunderland against elite Premier League opposition. A single defensive mistake or lapse in concentration can quickly be punished, particularly against a Manchester City side that has now won all five of its league matches.
For Roefs and the rest of Sunderland’s defence, the international break provides an opportunity to assess what went wrong and work on preventing similar defensive problems when Premier League action resumes.
