Celtic have been left with plenty to reflect on after a disappointing Europa League opening-night defeat to Ferencvaros at Celtic Park.
Martin O’Neill’s side entered the game looking for a response after their heavy 3-0 defeat to Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup at Ibrox, but instead suffered another damaging result as the Hungarian visitors secured a 3-1 victory.
Celtic made a bright start and created opportunities during the opening stages. James Forrest was among those causing problems, while Camilo Duran also went close as the hosts attempted to establish control.
However, Ferencvaros punished Celtic with their first serious attacking opportunity. Bamidele Yusuf’s effort in the 20th minute took a deflection off Liam Scales and found its way into the net, leaving the home side behind.
Celtic eventually found a response shortly before half-time when Mika Baur swept the ball home to restore parity. With momentum seemingly shifting back towards the hosts, another defensive lapse proved costly.
Ferencvaros captain Kristoffer Zachariassen restored the visitors’ advantage in first-half stoppage time, giving Celtic another problem to solve immediately after their equaliser.
The situation became even more difficult just two minutes into the second half. Former Celtic player Daniel Arzani produced a superb long-range strike to make it 3-1, putting Ferencvaros firmly in control.
Celtic attempted to respond, but their attacking play lacked the precision needed to break down a disciplined Ferencvaros defence. Several balls were delivered across the penalty area without a Celtic player arriving to convert them.
O’Neill made changes in an attempt to alter the flow of the match, but Celtic were unable to produce the comeback their supporters were hoping for.
The result means Celtic have begun their Europa League campaign with defeat and now face another major test against Rangers this weekend.
Speaking after the match, O’Neill acknowledged the disappointment and admitted that Celtic had been taught a lesson by their opponents.
The Celtic manager pointed to the timing of Ferencvaros’ second goal and the way his team conceded immediately after the interval as particularly frustrating moments.
Celtic’s official match report confirmed the final score as 3-1, with Baur scoring for the hosts while Yusuf, Zachariassen and Arzani were on target for Ferencvaros.
The back-to-back defeats have therefore created a difficult situation for O’Neill and his players. After the loss at Ibrox, Celtic needed a strong European response, but instead they conceded three more goals and were unable to turn their periods of pressure into a positive result.
Attention now turns towards Sunday’s Old Firm meeting, where Celtic will have another opportunity to respond on home soil.
For O’Neill, the immediate challenge is to identify the problems exposed during these two defeats and find a way to restore confidence and defensive stability quickly. The Celtic boss had already acknowledged before the Ferencvaros match that his players were disappointed by the Rangers defeat and needed to respond.
With seven Europa League league-phase matches still remaining, Celtic have time to recover in Europe. However, the Ferencvaros defeat has undoubtedly given O’Neill and his coaching staff plenty to think about as they prepare for another crucial fixture.
