Daniel Farke’s side delivered a breathtaking attacking display, particularly during the opening 45 minutes, as they scored three times before the interval at Elland Road for the first time in 25 years.
The home supporters were treated to an outstanding performance as Leeds completely overwhelmed Newcastle and took control of the contest.
Ao Tanaka opened the scoring in the 32nd minute after his effort took a deflection before finding its way past the Newcastle goalkeeper.
Leeds quickly built on their advantage, with Jayden Bogle finding the net to make it 2-0. Dominic Calvert-Lewin then compounded Newcastle’s misery by scoring shortly before half-time, sending the hosts into the break with a commanding three-goal advantage.
There was no sign of Leeds taking their foot off the gas after the restart. Noah Okafor struck shortly before the hour mark to make it 4-0, transforming an already impressive victory into a complete rout and sending the atmosphere inside Elland Road to another level.
Newcastle eventually managed to pull one goal back deep into stoppage time through substitute Bazoumana Toure. However, the late effort was little more than a consolation and could not take the shine off Leeds’ spectacular performance.
The goal also denied James Trafford what would have been a deserved clean sheet after his impressive contribution throughout the match.
Jamie Carragher Praises Leeds After Newcastle ‘Bullying’
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes Newcastle should not be overly embarrassed by the result, insisting that the Magpies were simply beaten by a stronger and more physically imposing Leeds side.
Carragher highlighted the physical difference between the two teams and suggested that the defeat could serve as an important learning experience for Newcastle’s younger players and their new coaching staff.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher said:
“Leeds are fifth in the Premier League now since last December; they are a really good Premier League team.”
He added that Newcastle could take some comfort from facing a side that has established itself as a strong Premier League outfit, although the manner of the defeat would undoubtedly hurt.
“Newcastle should feel a bit better about that, but they will feel like they have just been beaten up with the whole world watching on Monday Night Football,” Carragher explained.
The former defender also pointed to the significant physical advantage Leeds currently possess.
“Leeds are on a completely different level to Newcastle physically, and for the young player they have brought in, it was a lesson for them and their new manager.”
Carragher believes the result should provide Newcastle’s new coaching team with a reality check about the difficulty of the campaign ahead.
“I think now the new Newcastle coaching staff will realise this season is not going to be easy. That was back to reality for them tonight; they were just beaten up.”
Leeds Still Have Areas to Improve
Despite their impressive start, Leeds are not without weaknesses.
The club currently have several important players available, while Ilia Gruev is expected to return to the squad following his knee injury. Joe Rodon is also reportedly expected to return before the end of December.
However, the squad still appears to have some notable gaps, particularly in attack.
Calvert-Lewin has quickly demonstrated how important he can be to Leeds, and the club lack another striker who appears to be close to his level. His absence through injury could therefore leave the Whites short of attacking firepower.
Keeping the 29-year-old fit will be crucial if Leeds are to maintain their impressive form throughout the campaign.
There are still weaknesses that could potentially be exposed as the season progresses, but on the evidence of their performance against Newcastle, Leeds currently look capable of causing serious problems for even the strongest teams in English football.
