Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly not considering Roberto De Zerbi’s dismissal at this stage, with the club determined to avoid making any “knee-jerk reactions” despite their disappointing start to the Premier League season.
Spurs narrowly escaped relegation last season before investing heavily during the summer transfer window. More than £300 million was spent on new players, raising hopes that De Zerbi could oversee a dramatic turnaround in fortunes.
Instead, Tottenham’s difficult spell has continued into the new campaign.
After four Premier League matches, Spurs remain without a victory and have collected just two points, leaving them dangerously close to the relegation zone.
Their latest setback came on Saturday evening when Tottenham were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The result was greeted by boos from sections of the home support at full-time, while speculation over De Zerbi’s future has already started to grow.
However, despite the mounting frustration, Tottenham are reportedly not preparing to make a managerial change.
The club’s poor start is certainly a concern, but De Zerbi has had to work with a significantly reshaped squad following a huge summer rebuild. Several important players are also still unavailable, giving the Italian coach further reasons to believe that his team can improve once everyone is settled and fit.
Tottenham stance on Roberto De Zerbi revealed
Journalist Pete O’Rourke told Football Insider that Tottenham have decided to continue backing De Zerbi, with the manager himself remaining confident that he can turn the situation around if he is given sufficient time.
“No manager in the Premier League can go on for too long with a losing start to the new season,” O’Rourke explained.
“That’s the job, this game is based on getting results and Roberto De Zerbi will be fully aware of that. Two points from four games is not good enough.
“He’s definitely got time on his side, De Zerbi, for what he did last year when he came in and rescued the club and made sure they didn’t suffer the ignominy of Premier League relegation.
“It will take time for these new players to bed in and get used to their new surroundings and to perform to their highest level as well.
“So De Zerbi is confident that he can turn things around at Spurs and he believes he does have the support and the backing of the Tottenham board as things stand.
“There’ll be no knee-jerk reactions at Tottenham. The club are fully behind De Zerbi and they see him as the man to get things right.”
Following the Everton stalemate, De Zerbi also admitted that Tottenham are still struggling with a psychological hangover from last season.
The Spurs boss described the team’s current problem as a “mental block”, pointing to their failure to win or score in their opening four league fixtures.
“There is a word in Italian – sbloccarsi – that literally translates as if we unblock ourselves,” De Zerbi said.
“[It is] a mental block because four games, no wins, no goals scored … it is tough for the players.
“The team is extremely strong, we can score goals and we can win games. And then we have to respect the history of the players in their careers.
“Forget Dominic Solanke and Marmoush – the other players … they didn’t score many, many goals in their careers and we have to find these goals. I think we can do so with the quality of our play.”
For now, Tottenham appear willing to give De Zerbi the opportunity to solve the problems on the pitch rather than react to a frustrating opening four games with a change in the dugout.
