Nuno Espírito Santo’s side delivered a ruthless display at the London Stadium, scoring six goals through six different players as they overwhelmed Wrexham and climbed back to the top of the Championship table.
Jarrod Bowen opened the scoring before Joel Piroe doubled the advantage, while Konstantinos Mavropanos, Taty Castellanos, Mahamadou Kante and Manor Solomon added further goals after the break. The result also extended West Ham’s winning run to four consecutive league matches.
However, despite the celebrations surrounding such a convincing victory, Merson believes West Ham must remain grounded.
The pundit acknowledged that the Hammers were excellent going forward and made the most of Wrexham’s weaknesses, but he warned that stronger opponents could expose areas of the team that were not tested sufficiently during Friday night’s demolition.
Merson’s central argument is that a six-goal victory, impressive as it may be, does not automatically prove that every weakness has disappeared.
The former England international believes defensive concentration and squad balance will be particularly important when West Ham face teams capable of punishing mistakes.
Wrexham struggled to cope with West Ham’s movement, attacking intensity and quality in the final third. The Hammers were able to control the contest and turn their chances into goals, but Merson believes the real examination will come against higher-quality opposition.
His warning comes at a time when West Ham are beginning to build serious momentum.
After opening their Championship campaign with two draws and a defeat, the London club have now responded with four successive league victories. Their latest result was also their biggest league win in 28 years, while having six different scorers represented a new club record.
That run has transformed the mood around the club, with West Ham now looking increasingly like genuine promotion contenders.
Nevertheless, Merson’s message is clear: the Hammers must treat the Wrexham victory as a foundation rather than a finished product.
The result has undoubtedly provided confidence to the players and supporters, while the six goals will give the attacking players enormous belief heading into the next fixtures.
But consistency will ultimately determine whether West Ham can maintain their position at the summit.
For Nuno and his players, the challenge is therefore to reproduce the same intensity, discipline and attacking quality against tougher opponents.
Merson’s comments may sound harsh following such a spectacular victory, but they underline an important point. Football seasons are decided over months, not one memorable evening.
West Ham can certainly celebrate their 6-0 demolition of Wrexham. However, if they want to return to the Premier League, they must prove that this performance is the beginning of a sustained run of excellence rather than simply one spectacular night.
For now, the Hammers have momentum, confidence and the Championship summit. The next challenge will be showing that they can maintain it.
