The former Liverpool captain was part of TNT Sports’ coverage as the Reds hosted Atletico Madrid in their opening Champions League fixture of the new campaign. Gerrard, who has become a popular presence in the broadcaster’s punditry team, was involved in one of the night’s most amusing moments.
The incident came after Atletico Madrid forward Marcos Llorente gave the visitors an early lead at Anfield. The Spanish midfielder has developed an impressive scoring record at the stadium, having repeatedly found the net against Liverpool in European competition.
During the broadcast, commentator Darren Fletcher mentioned an unusual piece of trivia concerning Llorente. The Atletico star had previously named his dog “Anfield”, reportedly because of his memorable scoring exploits at Liverpool’s famous stadium.
That immediately gave Gerrard an opportunity to make a joke about Liverpool’s local rivals.
The Liverpool legend simply replied:
“Might call mine Goodison.”
The comment left those around him amused and provided a classic piece of Merseyside banter during a Champions League night.
Gerrard’s reference was, of course, to Goodison Park, Everton’s former home and one of the most famous grounds in English football. The former Liverpool midfielder enjoyed plenty of success against Everton throughout his career and was particularly influential in the Merseyside derby.
Across his Premier League appearances against Everton, Gerrard scored nine goals and registered four assists, giving him 13 goal contributions against Liverpool’s local rivals.
One of his most memorable performances came in March 2012, when he scored a hat-trick against Everton during Liverpool’s 3-0 victory at Anfield. The treble made Gerrard the first player since Ian Rush in 1982 to score three times in a Merseyside derby.
While Everton supporters may not have appreciated Gerrard’s latest joke, Liverpool fans certainly enjoyed the moment.
The remark also came during an entertaining Champions League encounter. Atletico Madrid initially took the lead through Llorente, but Liverpool responded before eventually completing a comeback to secure a 2-1 victory.
Gerrard’s quick comment therefore became one of the talking points away from the action on the pitch, with his familiar rivalry with Everton once again providing the perfect backdrop for some Merseyside humour.
