adminThe Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) has come under fresh scrutiny following a controversial VAR decision during Nottingham Forest’s goalless Premier League draw with Tottenham Hotspur.
Forest appeared to take the lead when Neco Williams found the back of the net after a chaotic sequence inside the Tottenham penalty area. However, the goal was subsequently overturned following a VAR intervention for a possible handball.
The decision sparked an immediate reaction from Forest players, supporters and manager Oliver Glasner, who questioned whether the available footage provided enough evidence for VAR to intervene.
According to the Premier League Match Centre, VAR checked the referee’s original decision to award the goal and determined that Williams had handled the ball immediately before it crossed the line. VAR therefore recommended that the goal be disallowed.
The incident occurred after Tottenham struggled to clear the ball, with Sandro Tonali attempting to prevent it from crossing the line. Williams was then in the right place to put the ball into the net, only for the goal to be ruled out.
The decision left Forest furious, particularly because of the difficulty in establishing exactly what happened from the available replay angles.
Glasner was particularly critical of the intervention, arguing that VAR should not become involved when the evidence is inconclusive. He suggested that the decision appeared to be based on an interpretation rather than undeniable evidence.
However, former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett defended the officials and argued that the correct decision had ultimately been reached. He pointed to the laws governing scoring with the hand or arm and said VAR had performed its role correctly.
The controversy has once again placed the Premier League’s VAR procedures under the spotlight.
Under the official VAR protocol, the technology can intervene in goal and no-goal situations where there is a potential clear and obvious error or a serious missed incident. The VAR can recommend a review, but the referee remains responsible for the final decision.
The draw was particularly frustrating for Forest because they had looked capable of securing all three points against a Tottenham side that remains without a Premier League goal after three matches.
Tottenham eventually escaped with a 0-0 draw and their first point of the campaign, while Forest were left wondering what might have happened had Williams’ effort been allowed to stand.
The latest controversy is likely to fuel further debate about VAR and the threshold officials should meet before overturning decisions on the pitch.
