Diarra was introduced shortly after the hour mark and quickly made his presence felt, providing the assist for Wilson Isidor to score the decisive goal. However, his impressive cameo was cut short when he appeared to pick up a muscle problem just minutes after setting up the winner.
Despite the concern surrounding Diarra, Le Bris was delighted with the impact made by both the midfielder and Isidor after they were brought on. Their energy helped Sunderland deal with a difficult contest and secure an important three points.
Speaking after the match, Le Bris acknowledged the quality of the Fulham side and explained why he had expected a challenging encounter.
“Fulham are a really good team. They are well organised and very good on the ball. They have talented players, they run a lot and they are intense,” Le Bris said.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game, and that’s exactly how it turned out. The balance of the game was different at different times. In the first half, we had good control. We probably didn’t create enough opportunities to score, but we were well balanced and managed their transitions, which was important after the Ipswich game.
“In the second half, things were a little different. I think we started well and had an opportunity to score early. It wasn’t a huge chance, but we were high up the pitch.
“After that, the game became more open, so we decided to introduce some fresh energy. I think our substitutes did really well.”
Le Bris was particularly impressed by Diarra’s intensity after coming off the bench.
“Habib is so intense; so intense,” the Sunderland boss added.
“Wilson was the same. They changed the way we pressed. Tactically, it was the same, but there was 20 or 30 per cent more energy.”
On Diarra’s injury, Le Bris offered an encouraging initial assessment but admitted Sunderland would need to wait before knowing the full extent of the problem.
“His injury doesn’t look too serious at the minute, but we’ll see,” he said.
Le Bris praises Mukiele after impressive return
Le Bris also reserved special praise for Nordi Mukiele following the defender’s return to the starting lineup.
Mukiele delivered an impressive performance at the heart of Sunderland’s defence and played a key role in the winning goal. His excellent pass released Diarra, who subsequently found Isidor to complete the decisive move.
Le Bris was thrilled with what he saw from the defender after a difficult period during pre-season.
“I think he was excellent today, and he had a really good pre-season,” Le Bris said.
“I was really impressed and I told him this. Unfortunately, he picked up that late injury at the end of the US tour.
“He then had to wait and rebuild his foundations to be ready for the season, and today he showed that he is a great player.
“He had great energy and was very well connected with the squad. Impressive.”
Mukiele’s performance will come as a major boost for Sunderland, particularly after his injury disrupted his preparations. His contribution against Fulham demonstrated the importance of having experienced players capable of making a difference in tight Premier League matches.
For Le Bris, the victory was ultimately made possible by the collective effort of his players, with the substitutes providing the extra intensity Sunderland needed to see out a difficult game and claim a valuable win.
