Another departure from Man City as Marmoush joins big-spending Tottenham on loan

Tottenham Hotspur have added another major attacking option to their rapidly evolving squad, while Manchester City have sanctioned yet another high-profile departure during a busy summer transfer window.

Egypt international Omar Marmoush has joined Spurs on a season-long loan, with the agreement reportedly containing an obligation for Tottenham to make the move permanent next summer for around £50 million ($68 million).

The transfer further highlights the contrasting approaches of the two Premier League giants this summer. Tottenham have been among Europe’s biggest spenders, investing more than $400 million in new players as Roberto De Zerbi continues his ambitious squad rebuild. Manchester City, meanwhile, have generated roughly $400 million from player sales while allowing Marmoush, who had been viewed as Erling Haaland’s backup, to leave.

Marmoush arrived at City from Eintracht Frankfurt in January 2025 for a reported €70 million ($73 million), but the forward struggled to establish himself as a consistent starter. Despite Pep Guardiola’s departure at the end of last season, Marmoush’s situation did not dramatically change.

City manager Enzo Maresca recently indicated that Marmoush had not formally requested a transfer but acknowledged that regular first-team opportunities could not be guaranteed.

His departure comes despite City already significantly reducing the size of their squad this summer. Several established names have moved on, including Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders, Nico Gonzalez, Bernardo Silva and John Stones.

Brazilian winger Savio, previously known as Savinho, has also left City to join Tottenham in a deal reportedly worth £85 million ($115 million), adding another major attacking weapon to De Zerbi’s squad.

Spurs have continued their aggressive recruitment with a number of other notable additions. Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali reportedly arrived from Newcastle for a club-record £100 million ($133 million), while Mateus Fernandes joined from West Ham for £85 million (then $113 million).

Tottenham have also strengthened their defence with the arrivals of Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi and Andrew Robertson as De Zerbi looks to transform the club into a stronger force ahead of the new campaign.
