Tottenham’s Summer Spending Isn’t Done Yet – De Zerbi Still Eyeing Key Attacking Additions
Despite a heavy summer outlay, Roberto De Zerbi’s revamped Tottenham attack remains a work in progress.
The club has reinforced key areas – Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes add steel in midfield, while Andy Robertson brings veteran stability to the backline.
The overhaul has been urgent, given De Zerbi inherited a side that narrowly avoided relegation last term, but the front line still looks incomplete.
Spurs have pursued Savinho and weighed up several centre-forward candidates, including former Arsenal prospect Folarin Balogun. The underlying need is clear: more pace, sharper finishing, and greater tactical versatility around Dominic Solanke, Richarlison, and Mohammed Kudus once he returns to fitness.
That search keeps circling back to Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo. The Dutchman thrives cutting in from the left onto his stronger right foot, but he’s also been deployed centrally for both club and country. At 27, he’d arrive as a seasoned Premier League operator.
Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 and initially took time to adapt under Jürgen Klopp. Still, he managed seven goals in his first 26 outings before evolving into a regular and flexible squad member.
His most prolific campaign came in 2024/25, when he netted 18 times across all competitions – including a strike against Spurs on the day Liverpool clinched the title.
Last season was quieter: nine goals and six assists in 52 appearances. Even so, his ability to cover two attacking roles makes him an appealing target for De Zerbi.
Liverpool tied Gakpo down to a new £250,000-per-week long-term deal last August, so they’re under no obligation to sell – especially as Andoni Iraola reshapes their own attack. The latest signals, however, suggest Tottenham are ready to step up their pursuit.
Spurs in ‘Very Concrete’ Gakpo Talks – Liverpool Already Contacted
Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that Tottenham are now holding “very concrete” discussions with Gakpo’s camp and have also approached Liverpool directly over a potential deal.
But there’s a key caveat: sources close to the player have denied that any agreement is in place – neither on personal terms nor on the transfer itself. This remains an active, evolving chase, not a done deal.
Gakpo is still viewed as a serious target for Spurs, and it’s easy to see why.
His power, experience, and positional flexibility make him an ideal fit – capable of competing on the left, filling in centrally behind Solanke, and offering De Zerbi another reliable goal threat.
The real question is Liverpool’s stance. Tottenham may be able to convince the player and keep negotiations alive, but Gakpo’s long contract leaves the Reds firmly in the driver’s seat.
Unless Liverpool’s own summer plans make a sale convenient, Spurs might once again discover that identifying the right attacker is far simpler than actually landing him.
