The 19-year-old right-back is regarded as one of the emerging talents within Newcastle’s system, and the temporary switch to Portugal is expected to provide him with valuable first-team experience that would have been difficult to secure on Tyneside this season.
Shahar made his senior debut for Newcastle last season, marking an important milestone in his development. The youngster was introduced as a second-half substitute during Newcastle’s Champions League victory over Qarabag in February, giving him his first taste of competitive senior football at the highest level.
The teenager also impressed during Newcastle’s pre-season preparations this summer. With Tino Livramento unavailable because of injury at the time, Shahar was given opportunities to operate at right-back and became a regular member of the first-team group.
His performances during pre-season demonstrated that Newcastle’s coaching staff have confidence in his potential. However, the situation surrounding the club’s right-back options has changed significantly ahead of the new campaign.
Amar Dedic’s arrival from Benfica last month has increased competition for places in the position, while Livramento has also returned to training after recovering from his injury. With both senior players available, Shahar would have faced a difficult battle for regular first-team minutes.
Rather than allowing the youngster to remain on the fringes of the squad, Newcastle have opted for a move that should give him the opportunity to play consistently at senior level.
FC Arouca provides an interesting destination for Shahar because the Portuguese top flight can offer him competitive football while allowing Newcastle to monitor his progress. Regular appearances could help him develop his defensive awareness, decision-making, physicality and overall confidence.
The move is particularly significant because Arouca have made an excellent start to their Primeira Liga campaign. They currently sit third in the league standings after collecting nine points from their opening four matches.
That strong start could give Shahar an opportunity to become involved in a team competing near the top end of the Portuguese table. If he can establish himself as an important player during his loan spell, the experience could prove crucial when he returns to Newcastle.
For the Magpies, the decision represents another step in managing the development of one of their young prospects. Instead of allowing Shahar’s progress to stall behind established first-team options, the club has chosen to send him somewhere he can gain regular senior football.
Newcastle will now be hoping that the 19-year-old makes the most of his opportunity in Portugal, develops further during the campaign and returns to Tyneside ready to challenge for a more prominent role in the future.
