adminAtletico Madrid have reportedly agreed on personal terms with Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero, according to GIVEMESPORT. Spurs are willing to part ways with the 28-year-old for around £35 million, and negotiations are now underway between the two clubs, with a formal bid expected soon.
Romero openly expressed his desire to leave Spurs last summer, hinting in interviews that a move to Spain appealed to him. Atletico didn’t act at the time, but have revived their pursuit in recent weeks.
Tottenham are open to selling the Argentine international after bolstering their backline with Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi, while Micky van der Ven is nearing a new contract. Though Van der Ven’s deal isn’t finalized, talks are advancing well, with Roberto De Zerbi playing a key part in convincing him to stay.
Romero is under contract until 2029. With Brighton’s Van Hecke costing £52 million despite having only one year left on his deal, Spurs might command a similar fee. However, an exit is viewed as a win-win, which has led to the relatively modest asking price.
Inter Milan have also held talks with Spurs, but have yet to agree terms with Romero, who was instrumental in Argentina reaching a second straight World Cup final this summer. According to GIVEMESPORT, Romero prefers a move to Atletico and is now waiting for the clubs to settle on a transfer fee.
Arsenal have discussed Romero internally, but haven’t approached Tottenham. Spurs sources insist any bid from their north London rivals would be instantly dismissed, with no interest in selling to Arsenal.
Since arriving in the Premier League, Romero has earned a reputation as one of the league’s finest defenders. His defensive partner Micky van der Ven has often lauded him, calling him “world-class.”
“For me, he is world-class. He is a leader. He always gives 100 per cent. He is a top-class player with and without the ball,” Van der Ven said.
“I can assure you he is not afraid of anyone. He fights every game. From the first day he arrived, he’s helped me. He’s simply a world-class player.”
Romero originally joined Spurs on loan from Atalanta in August 2021, with the deal made permanent a year later. Since then, he has made 156 appearances, captained the side, and lifted the 2024/25 Europa League trophy under Ange Postecoglou.
