Arsenal have reportedly made an initial approach for Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero, potentially setting up one of the most explosive transfers in recent Premier League history.
The Gunners are believed to have contacted Romero’s representatives to gather information about a possible move, which would see them sign a senior Tottenham player directly for the first time since 1977.
Arsenal recently suffered a major setback in their pursuit of Vinicius Junior after the Real Madrid winger agreed to a new six-year contract with the Spanish giants. The Brazilian had entered the final year of his previous deal, but negotiations eventually resulted in a fresh agreement.
With that opportunity now seemingly off the table, Arsenal are looking at alternative targets as they continue to strengthen Mikel Arteta’s squad.
One area that could require additional reinforcement is central defence. William Saliba is expected to miss the early part of the season following back surgery, leaving Arsenal with Gabriel Magalhaes and Cristhian Mosquera as the most likely defensive pairing.
Piero Hincapie and Jurrien Timber are also capable of operating at centre-back, although both players were regularly used in wider defensive positions last season.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have now shown interest in Romero and have already spoken to his representatives.
Romano explained that Arsenal have requested information about the Argentine defender, but Tottenham would much rather sell their captain to a club outside England.
Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan are also monitoring the 28-year-old, with Atletico currently considered the favourites to secure his signature.
Tottenham are reportedly reluctant to sanction a move that would see Romero join their bitter north London rivals. As a result, Arsenal may need Spurs to make an unprecedented decision before the transfer can happen.
Romano said Arsenal are looking at centre-backs and that Romero is among the players they have explored, but stressed that Tottenham’s preference is to sell abroad.
Atletico Madrid are already negotiating with Spurs, while Inter Milan’s pursuit has slowed as they focus on resolving Benjamin Pavard’s situation.
However, if neither European club manages to complete a deal, Arsenal could potentially return to the negotiating table.
A transfer directly between Tottenham and Arsenal would be extremely rare. The most famous modern example of a player moving between the two clubs is Sol Campbell, who left Spurs as a free agent in 2001 before surprisingly joining Arsenal. The controversial decision remains one of the most bitter moments in the rivalry.
William Gallas later moved in the opposite direction in 2010 after leaving Arsenal on a free transfer.
However, the last player to actually be transferred directly from Tottenham to Arsenal was legendary goalkeeper Pat Jennings in 1977. Spurs agreed to sell the Northern Ireland international following their relegation from the First Division.
Jennings went on to become an Arsenal legend, making more than 300 appearances for the Gunners before ending his senior club career in 1985. He later returned to Tottenham to feature for their reserve side while preparing for Northern Ireland’s 1986 World Cup campaign.
A potential Romero transfer would therefore represent a remarkable chapter in the long and bitter history between the two north London rivals.
