adminAtletico Madrid have reached an agreement in principle with Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero, GIVEMESPORT has learned.
Tottenham are open to letting the 28-year-old go for roughly £35 million, and Atletico are now in direct negotiations with the Premier League club, with a formal offer anticipated.
Romero was vocal about his wish to leave Spurs last summer, even admitting in interviews that a future move to La Liga appealed to him. While Atletico didn’t make a move at the time, they have reignited their interest in recent weeks.
Spurs Willing to Let Romero Move On
Tottenham are prepared to part ways with the Argentine international after strengthening their defensive options with Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi, while Micky van der Ven is close to agreeing a new deal. Although Van der Ven’s contract hasn’t been signed yet, talks are progressing well, with Roberto De Zerbi playing a key role in convincing the Dutchman to remain at the club.
Romero’s current deal runs until 2029. Given that Brighton’s Van Hecke cost £52 million with just a year left on his contract, Spurs could reasonably demand a similar figure. However, an exit is seen as a mutually beneficial outcome, which has influenced Tottenham’s relatively modest valuation.
Internazionale have also held discussions with Spurs but have yet to reach personal terms with Romero, who played a pivotal role in Argentina’s run to a second consecutive World Cup final this summer. According to GIVEMESPORT, Romero favours a switch to Atletico Madrid and is now waiting to see if the two clubs can finalise a fee.
Arsenal have also talked about Romero internally, but they have not approached Tottenham directly. Spurs sources have made it clear that any approach from their north London rivals would be immediately rejected, as they have no intention of selling to Arsenal.
Romero Called ‘World-Class’
Since arriving in the Premier League, Romero has established himself as one of the division’s top defenders. His centre-back partner Micky van de Ven has frequently praised him, calling him “world-class” during their time together.
“For me, he is world-class. He is a leader. He always gives 100 per cent. He is a top-class player with and without the ball,” Van de Ven said.
“I can assure you he is not afraid of anyone. He fights every game. From the first day he arrived, he’s helped me. He’s simply a world-class player.”
Romero initially joined Spurs on loan from Atalanta in August 2021, with the move made permanent a year later. Since then, he has made 156 appearances for the club and captained the side, lifting the 2024/25 Europa League trophy under Ange Postecoglou.
