Kylian Mbappé on what Thomas Tuchel said to him after England’s 6-4 victory over France in the FIFA World Cup third-place play-off.

Reporter: “Kylian, we saw Thomas Tuchel talking to you right after the final whistle. What did he tell you?”

🗣️ Kylian Mbappé: “He came over with a smile and his opening line was, ‘You nearly got me fired today.’ We both cracked up because he fully understood how tense that game got.

“He told me England were cruising at 4-0, and then I scored—suddenly France had belief, and you could feel the whole stadium shift. He admitted that for a moment, he thought England were about to let it slip.

“I told him that’s just football—you keep pushing until the referee ends it. Even when everyone wrote us off, we never stopped fighting.

“He praised my display and said I caused his defense headaches all night. Coming from a manager of his caliber, that means a lot, even in defeat.

“Of course, I’m gutted we lost. Goals don’t carry much weight when the team doesn’t win. But we showed real fight in that second half, and that’s something we can take forward.

“Tuchel also said England had to battle hard because we made them earn every bit of that win. I think that’s fair. They deserved the victory, but we made sure they had to suffer for it right to the last second.”
