adminPedro Porro recently opened up about the repeated message he shared with his Tottenham teammates in the dressing room during last season’s tense relegation scrap.
It emerged weeks ago that Porro was among the players Roberto De Zerbi had in mind when he suggested only 10 or 12 members of the current squad would form the backbone of his Tottenham project.
That became clearer when Porro signed a new long-term deal, putting an end to rumours linking him with Real Madrid and Manchester City.
The contract is also said to make Porro one of the club’s top earners—and few fans would dispute that he’s earned it. He was one of the few consistent performers in a gruelling campaign, with Spurs only securing survival on the final day by a two-point margin.
Though not officially part of Tottenham’s leadership group last season, Porro did captain the side on several occasions. He’s long been one of the more vocal presences in defence, and with Cristian Romero and Guglielmo Vicario both expected to leave, there could be two leadership vacancies—making Porro a strong candidate to step into that core next season.
Pedro Porro shares the advice he gave his teammates
After logging more minutes than nearly anyone in the squad, Porro admitted he focused on keeping his teammates mentally sharp during the relegation fight.
Speaking to La Razon from Spain’s World Cup camp, he was asked how he handled such a tough season. His response:
“You manage it without changing anything. Just sticking to the routine that’s always worked. Because when you get caught in a negative spiral—when things aren’t clicking for the team—you want to change everything fast. You end up with three coaches in a year.
“The truth is, last year didn’t go well for us in the Premier League either. But we won the Europa League.
“That comes down to being more prepared mentally. Because you go out, play, and lose, then do it again and lose—it wears you down.
“I feel very mature in that sense. I kept telling my teammates: if we get through this, we’ll come out stronger. And hopefully next year things go better for us.”
De Zerbi eager to continue working with Porro
When Tottenham announced Porro’s extension, De Zerbi didn’t hide his admiration for the full-back.
Speaking on the club’s official website, he said:
“Pedro is a hugely important player for us. He’s consistently shown he can influence games at both ends of the pitch.
“Beyond his technical ability, I really love his mentality. Every day he wants to work, learn, and improve—and those are the traits that take players to the top.
“He reads the game very intelligently, and brings energy, intensity, and character to the team. This new deal is great news for everyone at the club. We believe in Pedro, and I’m excited to keep working with him and helping him achieve even more in the years ahead.”
