adminLeeds United have been strongly advised to make a new, improved contract for Ethan Ampadu their top priority this summer, amid concerns that one of the Premier League’s five Champions League-qualified clubs could come calling. TEAMtalk has a minor update on the midfielder’s current situation.
Ampadu has just wrapped up his third season at Elland Road—and arguably his finest in a Leeds shirt. Named both the club’s and players’ Player of the Year, the Wales international has been a tireless presence in the heart of Daniel Farke’s midfield.
Guiding Leeds to a 14th-place Premier League finish and an FA Cup semi-final appearance exceeded all preseason expectations. With Ampadu playing such a pivotal role, securing him to a major new deal—his current contract expires in a year—has become an urgent priority for the club.
Leeds urged to secure ‘vital’ Ampadu on fresh terms
Speaking to LeedsLive about Ampadu’s importance, Jermaine Beckford said: “It’s vital. Just look at what he’s achieved since joining the club—the personal strides he’s made and how he’s lifted those around him. That’s the mark of a true leader.
“He controls games with his voice. Off the pitch, he leads by example through his work ethic, determination, and drive. He puts his body on the line and isn’t afraid to take a knock.
“He’s someone everyone looks up to. He’s improved enormously since he first arrived, and the respect he commands everywhere is fully deserved. For me, he has to be Leeds’ first signing of the summer.”
Ampadu himself has given no indication that he wants to leave.
After helping Leeds reach 47 points this season, the Whites captain admitted the goal is to keep improving next term.
“To finish 14th is amazing,” he told the club’s media. “Our target was simply to stay in the Premier League, and we can be pleased with the season we’ve had.”
On aiming higher next year, he added: “That’s the aim. Every club wants that. You always want to achieve more, strive for more, and push harder.
“Now is the time to rest, reflect on what went well, and take the lessons we’ve learned.”
TEAMtalk previously revealed Leeds’ intention to extend Ampadu’s stay, and sources have heard nothing to suggest a summer exit is likely. We still believe the 25-year-old will commit to a new deal, as first reported in January.
