🗣️ Erling Haaland: “Honestly, I’m struggling to find the right words. I’m still trying to figure out what went wrong because this is not the kind of performance people normally associate with Manchester City.
“When Villa scored, I wasn’t worried at first. I believed we had enough time to turn things around. We’ve recovered from difficult situations before, scored several goals in quick succession, and shown teams that celebrating too early against us can be a mistake.
“But this game was completely different. Nothing seemed to work in our favour. We were giving the ball away, making poor decisions and rushing our attacks. Aston Villa kept closing down the spaces, and it became increasingly difficult to find a way through. I kept making runs and asking for the ball, hoping to create something, but it felt as though we weren’t working together as a team.
“And Jackson… honestly, he was a constant threat. Every time you thought you had contained him, he would find another way to cause problems. You could turn around, and there he was again, putting our defence under pressure. Villa played with the confidence and determination we usually bring to our matches, and that made the defeat even harder to accept.
“I kept checking the clock, telling myself there was still enough time to change the result. But the minutes continued to disappear. Another attack broke down, another opportunity was wasted, and the frustration kept growing. Eventually, you look at your teammates and realise that everyone is experiencing the same disappointment.
“The atmosphere in the dressing room after the final whistle was incredibly quiet. Nobody seemed interested in talking. You could hear players removing their boots, packing their belongings and moving around without saying much. Usually, someone tries to encourage the team after a defeat, but this time, nobody seemed to have the words.
“I absolutely hate losing, especially when I know we have the quality to produce a much better performance. What makes it worse is knowing that everyone will now be talking about our first defeat of the season, the end of our unbeaten run and how Aston Villa managed to expose our weaknesses.
“People might say it’s only one game, but when you play for Manchester City, the expectations are enormous. A defeat like this can feel much bigger than the result itself.
“Pep was understandably furious, and we were disappointed as well. However, there is a difference between being angry because you have lost and being frustrated because you know you failed to play at your usual level. Today, we simply didn’t look like ourselves.
“The biggest mistake might have been believing that our quality would eventually be enough to win the game. We walked onto the pitch expecting to find a solution, perhaps without fully appreciating how determined Aston Villa were to stop us.
“Villa believed they could defeat us, and their performance reflected that belief. We stepped onto the pitch carrying the reputation of Manchester City, but reputation alone cannot win football matches.
“I’m going home tonight knowing that this game will remain in my thoughts for a long time. That’s the reality of football. You can spend your career scoring goals and winning matches, but there are nights when all you can do is reflect on a disappointing performance and accept that the perfect feeling you had at the start of the season is gone.”
