Aston Villa player ratings vs Man City: Nicolas Jackson superb as 4/10 teammate has game to forget

Aston Villa handed Manchester City their first defeat of the 2026-27 campaign, winning 2-1 at Villa Park.

Nicolas Jackson put Villa ahead after just six minutes, finishing off a move with excellent footwork and a composed strike. Erling Haaland pulled one back for the visitors early in the second half with a header, giving Unai Emery’s side an uncomfortable start to the second period. Villa, however, kept pushing and reclaimed the lead through Jackson once more.

Emery is likely to be pleased with the performance as a whole, not just the result.

Nicolas Jackson shows he is more than just a goalscorer

Jackson may have scored twice against City, but the Senegalese forward demonstrated he offers far more than typical poacher’s instincts.

His second goal was particularly notable: he spotted Ibrahim Mbaye’s run before meeting the resulting cross to finish. According to FotMob, Jackson was highly effective in his duels and proved a constant problem for the City defence.

He won six of 11 ground duels (a 55 per cent success rate) and came out on top in both of his aerial battles.

By the time he was substituted in the 82nd minute, Jackson had recorded the highest number of sprints in the match, highlighting his willingness to chase down the ball or drive forward with it.

He also completed both of the dribbles he attempted, underlining his effectiveness. When Villa lost Ollie Watkins, replacing him looked like it would be a struggle — but Jackson has already put those concerns to rest.

Ian Maatsen struggles against Iliman Ndiaye

Ian Maatsen was recalled to the side to face City, and the Dutchman will not want to revisit this performance.

On his flank, Iliman Ndiaye proved a difficult opponent for the Villa defender, and that was clear from the Senegalese winger having the most touches in the opposition box (11) at the time he was withdrawn. The 26-year-old repeatedly found himself in dangerous areas, and it eventually told when he lifted a cross into the path of Erling Haaland — though Maatsen was not at fault on that occasion.

Maatsen also committed two fouls, while Ndiaye’s positioning restricted his ability to use his attacking qualities.

The 24-year-old barely got forward, though that may have been part of Emery’s game plan.
