“You cannot judge a player like Maddison purely by his statistics”- Owen Hargreaves on James Maddison during Tottenham vs Coventry

Owen Hargreaves praised James Maddison’s outstanding performance, explaining that the Tottenham midfielder’s ability to find space, create chances and deliver moments of brilliance makes him a player opponents must always watch closely.

Hargreaves said: “Before the match, I explained that Maddison could be extremely dangerous if he found those small spaces between the opposition’s defensive and midfield lines. He has done exactly that, showing why his creativity and awareness make him such a special player.

“He doesn’t have to be the strongest or tallest player on the pitch to make a difference. Give him even a little room around the edge of the penalty area, and he has the technique to make you pay. That is what makes him such a threat.

“Just look at the goal. While some people may focus on how accurately he struck the ball with his right foot, the build-up deserves equal attention. Kudus brilliantly gets past his marker before finding Maddison outside the box. Many players would hesitate or take an unnecessary extra touch, but Maddison already knows exactly what he wants to do before the ball reaches him.

“He then produces a stunning strike that flies into the top corner. Rushworth had little chance of stopping it. Honestly, even with two goalkeepers between the posts, I would struggle to see either of them saving that effort. The power, placement and technique were simply outstanding.

“That was a truly exceptional finish.

“We saw Diego Gomez score a brilliant goal for Brighton against Crystal Palace yesterday, while Arda Güler also delivered a special moment for Real Madrid last night. Maddison has now produced a finish worthy of being discussed alongside those efforts. Is it a potential goal-of-the-season contender? Without question.

“However, what impresses me most about Maddison is that his contribution extends far beyond scoring goals.

“Players with his qualities do not always receive the recognition they deserve. If you pay close attention to his movement, you will understand why managers appreciate him so much. He can drop deeper to help his team play out from defence, find pockets of space in midfield, combine effectively with Kudus, bring Solanke into the game and then move forward to influence attacks in the final third.

“He is always searching for opportunities to improve the team.

“That is the difference between an ordinary attacking midfielder and one who truly understands the game. Football is not just about scoring goals or delivering the final pass. It is also about recognising when to slow things down, when to move the ball quickly and when to help your teammates escape the opposition’s pressure. Maddison has an excellent understanding of all those situations.

“Watching Tottenham today, you can see the difference. They have taken the lead, and the team looks more organised, more connected and increasingly comfortable when controlling possession.

“Nevertheless, there is still plenty of work to be done. Taking the lead does not automatically resolve every problem, and Tottenham cannot afford to lose concentration. They must manage the remaining minutes intelligently and prevent Coventry from getting back into the contest.

“Even so, Maddison’s influence is already evident throughout the performance. He provides Tottenham with creativity, composure and the imagination required to break down a stubborn defence.

“You cannot evaluate a player like Maddison by looking at statistics alone. Sometimes, his most important contribution is the pass that creates the assist. On other occasions, it is his movement that opens up space for a teammate. And sometimes, it is a spectacular strike that leaves everyone inside the stadium wondering how he pulled it off.

“Tottenham will obviously be pleased with their advantage, but the most encouraging aspect is the way the team is playing around Maddison. The movement has improved, the passing combinations look more natural, and the players appear to have a clearer understanding of where their next opportunity will come from.

“They still need to see the game through, but there are plenty of positive signs.

“If Maddison can remain fit and continue producing performances of this quality, he could become one of the most important players in Tottenham’s season. His spectacular goal will dominate the headlines, but it is the intelligence, awareness and understanding behind his performance that truly set him apart.”
