James Maddison produced a stunning goal to help Tottenham secure their first Premier League victory of the season, admitting that the difficult moments he endured during his lengthy injury recovery had finally been worth it.
The Tottenham midfielder scored a sensational opener on his first start in 18 months, marking an emotional return to the starting lineup and helping Spurs climb off the bottom of the Premier League table.
It was a memorable evening for Tottenham, with Dejan Kulusevski also making his long-awaited comeback. The Swedish midfielder received a tremendous reception from the supporters when he came off the bench to make his first appearance for the club since May 2025.
Speaking after the match, Maddison opened up about the challenging period he experienced while recovering from injury and explained how moments like scoring such an important goal made the difficult journey worthwhile.
“Without going too deep into it, there were some dark days during rehabilitation. You dream about moments like these and scoring goals like that. They are always the light at the end of the tunnel,” Maddison said.
The England international also expressed his happiness for Kulusevski, explaining that he understood the emotions associated with returning to action after spending so much time on the sidelines.
“I felt emotional for Dejan Kulusevski because I know exactly how that feeling is after being out for so long. Goals like those make everything worthwhile,” he added.
Maddison also revealed that he had discussed his return to the starting lineup with Tottenham’s manager during the week, admitting that he wanted to make the most of the opportunity after experiencing an inconsistent start to the season.
“I spoke to the gaffer this week about whether it was the right time to come into the starting eleven after a stop-start beginning to the season.
“I just wanted to perform well, demonstrate my qualities and show what I can bring to the team, as well as what the team has missed over the last 18 months.
“The manager asked me to play and wanted to enjoy watching me from the sidelines. Hopefully, I gave him something to enjoy,” Maddison explained.
Meanwhile, Kulusevski also reflected on his emotional return, admitting that the reception from Tottenham supporters made the long road to recovery worthwhile.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the Swedish international said: “The reaction from the fans made it all worthwhile. I never gave up on this moment.”
However, Coventry City manager Frank Lampard felt his team had performed well despite suffering a 3-1 defeat against Tottenham.
Lampard acknowledged the quality of Tottenham’s goals but questioned the circumstances surrounding the second strike, suggesting there was a possible infringement involving an arm raised towards a player’s face.
“I’m very pleased with the performance. We were in the game, to say the least. They scored two outstanding goals, although the second one was questionable because of the arm raised towards the face. Nevertheless, it was a quality finish,” Lampard said.
The Coventry boss insisted that the final scoreline was harsh on his players, particularly because Tottenham’s third goal came late in the match.
“I’m proud of the performance. Losing 3-1 feels harsh at the end because of the final goal. We created some good moments and wanted to make a strong start, especially because Tottenham usually begin their home matches well but haven’t always received the results their performances deserved,” he added.
For Tottenham, the victory represented more than just three points. Maddison’s spectacular return and Kulusevski’s comeback provided an emotional boost, giving supporters renewed hope that two important players can help the club turn its season around.
