Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly decided against dismissing Roberto De Zerbi, despite their disappointing 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford, according to TEAMtalk.
The North London side travelled to Manchester on Saturday evening hoping to secure a much-needed victory in the Premier League. However, they were forced to settle for a point after a dramatic encounter that saw them fall behind, lose a player to a red card and score a late equaliser.
Neither side managed to find the breakthrough during a goalless first half. Manchester United eventually took the lead in the 73rd minute when Bryan Mbeumo found the back of the net, putting the hosts in a strong position to claim all three points.
Tottenham’s situation became even more difficult five minutes later when Rodrigo Bentancur received a straight red card for headbutting Luke Shaw. The dismissal left De Zerbi’s men with only 10 players for the closing stages of the match.
Despite the setback, Spurs refused to surrender. Their persistence paid off in the second minute of stoppage time when Dominic Solanke scored a late equaliser to rescue a valuable point for the visitors.
Nevertheless, the result does little to ease the growing concerns surrounding Tottenham’s difficult start to the campaign.
Tottenham Struggle Despite Huge Summer Investment
The draw at Old Trafford leaves Tottenham third from bottom in the Premier League standings, having collected just three points from their opening six matches.
Their poor start is particularly concerning given the club’s significant investment during the summer transfer window. Tottenham reportedly spent £334 million on new signings, with the club’s ownership, ENIC, expected to see a considerable improvement in results following such substantial spending.
Supporters had hoped that the arrival of De Zerbi and the club’s expensive recruitment drive would help Spurs challenge for a place in the Premier League’s top four this season.
Instead, Tottenham appear to be facing another difficult campaign, with the threat of a relegation battle becoming an increasing concern.
The club have finished 17th in the Premier League table in each of the previous two seasons, leaving fans desperate for a significant improvement in their performances and league position.
De Zerbi, however, deserves some credit for his work last season. After taking charge on March 31, 2026, the Italian helped Tottenham move away from immediate relegation danger and guided them to a 17th-place finish.
Despite those efforts, the team’s current struggles have raised questions about whether he can deliver the progress expected following the club’s summer spending.
However, TEAMtalk reports that Tottenham have no intention of parting ways with their manager at this stage.
Why Tottenham Are Still Backing Roberto De Zerbi
Tottenham’s decision to retain De Zerbi reportedly reflects the confidence the club’s hierarchy have in his ability to improve the team’s performances.
Transfer insider Graeme Bailey previously reported on September 21 that the Tottenham leadership remained convinced the Italian was the right man to lead the club forward.
At the time, a source close to the situation reportedly told TEAMtalk that the club continued to believe in De Zerbi despite the disappointing results.
The source explained that turning Tottenham’s fortunes around would not be an easy task, even after the club’s substantial investment in new players, while maintaining that De Zerbi remained the preferred manager to oversee the rebuilding process.
Bailey also indicated that Tottenham’s hierarchy believed the players had failed to perform at the level required and that De Zerbi deserved sufficient time to get the best out of the squad assembled during the summer.
There was also an understanding within the club that the problems inherited by the manager would not necessarily be resolved immediately, regardless of the money spent in the transfer market.
Consequently, Tottenham were not actively searching for alternative managerial candidates, with the club determined to give De Zerbi an opportunity to turn the situation around.
De Zerbi’s Position Remains Unchanged After Man Utd Draw
According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham’s position has not changed following Saturday’s dramatic draw against Manchester United.
Sources reportedly told transfer correspondent Fraser Fletcher that the North London club have no plans to sack De Zerbi, despite the team’s disappointing results in the opening weeks of the season.
The report also claims that De Zerbi had become frustrated by the lack of progress made by his players before the international break.
His frustration reportedly raised concerns within Tottenham that he could consider walking away from the role if the team’s performances continued to fall short of expectations.
Nevertheless, the club remain confident that the former Brighton and Marseille manager can improve the situation and guide Tottenham towards better results.
For now, De Zerbi appears to have the backing of the Tottenham hierarchy, although the pressure is likely to increase if the team’s poor form continues.
With an expensive squad at his disposal and supporters demanding a return to competitiveness, the Italian will need to find solutions quickly to prevent Tottenham’s season from deteriorating further.
Although his immediate future appears secure, improving results and moving the club away from the relegation zone will be crucial if he is to maintain the confidence of the supporters and the board.
