England produced one of their most impressive performances under Thomas Tuchel as they dismantled Croatia 7-0 in the UEFA Nations League, but one player in particular has emerged as the biggest talking point following the remarkable victory.
The Three Lions were virtually unstoppable in Rijeka, racing into a four-goal lead before half-time before adding three more goals after the interval. Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka both scored twice, while Jude Bellingham, Anthony Gordon and substitute Morgan Rogers were also on target.
However, despite the outstanding contributions from several England players, Jude Bellingham has attracted significant attention after producing a sensational all-round display.
The Real Madrid midfielder scored one goal and played a direct role in three other England goals, underlining his importance to Tuchel’s attacking system. His performance was so influential that Saka publicly suggested Bellingham deserved to be named England’s Player of the Year and potentially the man of the match against Croatia.
Bellingham was involved from the opening stages, helping create the move that allowed Kane to open the scoring in the eighth minute. He then got on the scoresheet himself before half-time after Gordon brilliantly created the opportunity.
His influence continued throughout the match, with his passing, movement and ability to drive England forward repeatedly causing problems for Croatia’s midfield and defence.
The 7-0 victory also produced a number of historic milestones. England recorded their biggest Nations League victory and their largest win since defeating North Macedonia by the same scoreline in 2023. More significantly, the result represented Croatia’s heaviest defeat in their history.
Bellingham’s performance was particularly impressive because of the quality of his involvement rather than simply his goal. His ability to connect midfield with the attack allowed England’s front players to operate with greater freedom.
Saka was equally impressed by his teammate after the final whistle.
The Arsenal winger, who scored twice himself, praised Bellingham’s display and highlighted how valuable it is for England to have players capable of producing performances at that level.
Kane also enjoyed another memorable night, scoring twice and registering an assist. His brace took his England tally to 89 international goals, while he moved to within one appearance of equalling Peter Shilton’s record of 125 caps for the men’s national team.
Saka also continued his excellent form by finding the net twice, while Gordon added another goal to his growing international reputation. Rogers completed the rout late in the second half.
Tuchel described the display as a “complete performance”, praising his entire squad for maintaining a high level from the opening whistle until the final minute.
The victory gives England considerable momentum in their Nations League campaign, while Bellingham’s performance has once again sparked debate about just how important the midfielder could become to Tuchel’s England side.
With the Three Lions continuing their campaign against Czechia next, Bellingham will be expected to maintain the same level of influence as England look to build on one of their most emphatic victories in recent years.
