Harry Kane Reveals What Jude Bellingham Told Him Immediately After His Costly Penalty Miss Against Spain

Harry Kane has revealed the conversation he had with Jude Bellingham immediately after his dramatic penalty miss during England’s painful 3-2 defeat to Spain at Wembley.

The England captain had a huge opportunity to put the Three Lions two goals ahead early in the second half after Bellingham was brought down inside the penalty area. Kane stepped up confidently, but the moment quickly turned into one of the most frustrating incidents of the match.

England were leading 2-1 at the time after goals from Anthony Gordon and Kane had overturned Lamine Yamal’s early opener. However, Kane slipped while taking the penalty, made accidental contact with the ball twice and saw the effort strike the crossbar.

Spain eventually recovered from the setback, with Álex Baena equalising before Mikel Oyarzabal scored the decisive goal to complete a 3-2 comeback.

Kane Reveals Bellingham’s Immediate Reaction

Speaking about the incident, Kane explained that he immediately realised something had gone wrong with his penalty.

According to Kane, Bellingham was already approaching him after the miss and tried to lighten the situation with a mixture of humour and encouragement.

“Harry, what was that?” Bellingham reportedly asked.

Kane explained that he had stood on his shoelace, which affected his balance as he attempted to strike the ball.

Bellingham then jokingly suggested that perhaps it was time for him to take the next penalty.

“Well, maybe now you’ve missed one, I can take the next one,” Bellingham told him.

Kane, however, made it clear that he was not ready to surrender England’s penalty duties.

“You know I’m still taking the next one,” Kane replied.

Bellingham continued the banter, telling his England captain that he had missed and therefore Bellingham should take the next opportunity.

The exchange highlighted the relationship between the two England stars, with Kane explaining that Bellingham’s joking response was also intended to help him move beyond the disappointment immediately.

Kane Refuses To Hide From The Mistake

Despite explaining what happened, Kane refused to use the circumstances surrounding the penalty as an excuse.

The Bayern Munich striker acknowledged that he had been presented with an important opportunity and expected himself to convert it.

“I should have scored,” Kane admitted.

Kane also recognised how important the moment was against Spain. With England leading 2-1, a successful penalty would have made it 3-1 and potentially changed the direction of the contest.

Instead, Spain survived and eventually turned the match around.

Kane said that against a side of Spain’s quality, England could not afford to waste the limited opportunities they created.

The England captain also accepted that there was no way to change what had already happened.

He took personal responsibility for the missed opportunity and acknowledged that football does not allow players to go back and repeat crucial moments.

Spain Punish England

England had started the second half strongly and looked capable of extending their lead.

But Spain responded impressively after Kane’s penalty miss.

Baena levelled the contest in the 60th minute after England lost possession, before Oyarzabal produced the decisive finish in the 74th minute.

The defeat meant England opened their Nations League campaign with a 3-2 loss at Wembley. Spain, meanwhile, extended their unbeaten run to 39 matches.

Kane had already made a major contribution by scoring England’s second goal, but his missed penalty became one of the defining moments of the match.

The England captain later described the miss as unfortunate, explaining that his standing foot slipped and caused him to make accidental double contact with the ball.

Bellingham’s Support Stood Out

For Kane, however, Bellingham’s immediate reaction was important.

Rather than allowing the striker to dwell on the mistake, Bellingham used humour to help him reset and focus on the remainder of the match.

That was particularly important because England still had a long way to go after the penalty.

Kane ultimately remained on the pitch and continued trying to influence the game, but Spain’s response proved decisive.

The defeat will leave England reflecting on several missed opportunities, while Kane will undoubtedly face further questions about the penalty.

Yet his message was clear: despite the disappointment, he still expects to take responsibility when England’s next penalty opportunity arrives.

And while Bellingham may have jokingly demanded the next spot-kick, Kane does not appear ready to give up the responsibility anytime soon.
