Tottenham Finally Receive Major Injury Boost as Long-Awaited Return Draws Closer After 500-Day Absence
The Sweden international has not featured for Spurs since May 11, 2025, when he was forced off during Tottenham’s 2-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace. At the time, former head coach Ange Postecoglou initially described the problem as “just a knock,” but further examinations revealed a much more serious injury to Kulusevski’s right patella.
The midfielder subsequently underwent surgery and has endured an extremely difficult rehabilitation process. A second operation was eventually required, further extending his absence and delaying his return to competitive football.
Kulusevski finally began full training with his Tottenham teammates around a month ago. Although head coach Roberto De Zerbi revealed that the player suffered a minor setback during his recovery, the 26-year-old has continued to make progress.
Recent footage released by the club has shown Kulusevski running and participating in training sessions, providing Tottenham supporters with renewed hope that his return is now approaching.
Kulusevski Could Return After International Break
There had been some suggestions that Kulusevski could potentially make his comeback with Sweden during the upcoming international period. However, that possibility disappeared after Graham Potter left the midfielder out of the squad for the UEFA Nations League fixtures.
Attention has therefore shifted towards his potential return to club football.
According to a report by The Sun, Kulusevski is now close to being considered for selection and could potentially make the Tottenham matchday squad after the international break.
The Premier League fixture against Manchester United on October 10 has reportedly emerged as one possible date for his return. Should Tottenham decide that the match comes too soon, Kulusevski could instead make his comeback during one of the following three or four fixtures, provided he suffers no further setbacks.
A Major Boost for Roberto De Zerbi
Kulusevski’s return could come at an important moment for Tottenham and De Zerbi.
Spurs have endured a difficult beginning to the new campaign despite making significant investments during the summer transfer window. The team’s lack of creativity has been one of the most noticeable issues, particularly in the attacking areas.
De Zerbi has already highlighted how important Kulusevski could be, describing his return as being similar to Tottenham completing another major signing.
The Swedish playmaker’s versatility could make him particularly valuable. He can operate on the right side of the attack, play in central midfield or feature in a No.10 role behind the striker.
Since joining Tottenham from Juventus in 2023, Kulusevski has recorded 55 goal involvements in 146 appearances across all competitions, demonstrating the attacking influence he can bring when fully fit.
Spurs Desperate for More Creativity
Tottenham’s struggles to create consistent opportunities have been a major talking point, with the problem carrying over from the latter stages of last season.
Kulusevski’s ability to carry the ball, create chances and contribute directly to goals could therefore provide De Zerbi with another important attacking option.
After such a lengthy absence, Tottenham will naturally need to manage his comeback carefully rather than immediately expecting him to play every minute. Nevertheless, simply having the 26-year-old available again could significantly increase competition and give De Zerbi greater tactical flexibility.
For Spurs supporters, the prospect of seeing Kulusevski back on the pitch will be particularly encouraging after more than 500 days away from competitive action.
If his recovery continues without another setback, the long wait could finally be approaching its conclusion.
