Opta Supercomputer Makes Huge Premier League Title Prediction After Five Matchdays as Arsenal and Man City Lead the Race

The Premier League title race has already taken an interesting turn after the opening five matchdays of the 2026/27 season, with Opta’s supercomputer significantly changing its projections following the latest results.

Although only five league games have been played, the early results have provided Opta with more data to work with, leading to noticeable changes in the estimated chances of several clubs lifting the Premier League trophy.

Manchester City have made the strongest start to the campaign, winning all five of their matches and becoming the only side in the division with a perfect record. Arsenal sit three points behind them, while Brighton and Brentford have also impressed during the opening weeks.

Despite Arsenal suffering a defeat against Brighton, the Gunners remain Opta’s leading candidates for the title. Their chances have increased from 40.6 per cent before the season to 43.7 per cent after five matches.

Manchester City, however, have closed the gap considerably. Their title probability has risen from 19.6 per cent before the campaign to 39.8 per cent following their perfect beginning.

The latest figures mean Arsenal and Manchester City now account for 83.4 per cent of Opta’s projected title chances combined, highlighting the gap between the leading pair and the rest of the field.

Liverpool are currently third in the model’s projections with a 5.7 per cent chance of winning the title. The Reds remain unbeaten under new manager Andoni Iraola but have drawn three of their opening five matches, causing their title probability to fall from the pre-season figure of 9.2 per cent.

One of the biggest surprises has been Brighton. After an impressive start, the Seagulls have moved into fourth place in Opta’s title projections with a 4.2 per cent chance of winning the league.

Brighton currently boast the highest goalscoring total in the division with 16 goals and have the league’s best goal difference at +11. Their victory over Arsenal also ended the Gunners’ unbeaten run stretching back to April.

Behind the leading contenders, Brentford have been given a 1.2 per cent chance of winning the title, while Everton have 1.1 per cent. Chelsea and Manchester United are both rated at 1.0 per cent and 0.9 per cent respectively.

Manchester City Make Biggest Improvement

Manchester City have recorded the biggest rise in title probability during the opening five matchdays.

Their chances have increased by 20.2 percentage points, reflecting their flawless start under Enzo Maresca.

Maresca has become only the sixth manager to win his first five Premier League matches in charge of a club, joining an exclusive group that includes Carlo Ancelotti, Pep Guardiola, Craig Shakespeare, Maurizio Sarri and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Arsenal have also seen their title chances increase despite their defeat to Brighton. Their projection has climbed by three percentage points compared with the pre-season estimate.

Opta’s model has been influenced not only by Arsenal’s performances but also by the struggles of several other teams who entered the campaign among the expected contenders.

Brighton have also enjoyed a substantial rise, with their title chances more than doubling from two per cent before the season to 4.2 per cent following their impressive opening five matches.

Manchester United Suffer Major Drop

Manchester United have experienced one of the biggest declines in Opta’s projections.

United have collected only five points from their first five league games, matching their joint-lowest points tally at this stage of a Premier League season, alongside their record from 2014/15.

Interestingly, Opta’s data suggests that United’s attacking performances have been better than their results indicate. They have registered 113 shots and 182 touches inside the opposition penalty area, both strong figures.

However, their inability to convert that attacking pressure into goals and points has affected their title prospects.

United began the campaign with a 6.6 per cent chance of winning the league, but that figure has now fallen to just 0.9 per cent.

Aston Villa have also suffered a decline, with their title probability dropping by 3.7 percentage points after losing three of their opening four matches before finally beating Tottenham.

Chelsea have seen their chances fall by 2.8 percentage points after failing to win any of their last three matches following an explosive start under Xabi Alonso.

Tottenham have also dropped 2.4 percentage points in Opta’s projections. Spurs are currently bottom of the Premier League after five matches, marking the first time they have occupied last place at this stage since the 2008/09 season.

With the campaign still in its early stages, however, the projections remain subject to significant change. Five matches represent only a small sample, and Opta’s supercomputer will continue updating its calculations as more results and performances are recorded throughout the season.
