Manchester City’s dramatic 5-3 victory over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium on September 20 continues to attract significant attention after an extraordinary Premier League encounter that produced eight goals, a hat-trick and several controversial moments.
Enzo Maresca’s side entered the game looking to maintain their perfect start to the campaign, and they eventually achieved that objective. However, the manner of the victory highlighted both Manchester City’s attacking strength and some defensive weaknesses that Sunderland repeatedly exposed.
City took the lead after just nine minutes when Enzo Fernández caught Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs off guard with a dangerous delivery from a tight angle. The advantage lasted only three minutes, however, as Brian Brobbey raced through and lifted the ball over Gianluigi Donnarumma to equalise.

The first half still had another twist. Semenyo found the net shortly before the interval to put City 3-2 ahead, setting the stage for an even more dramatic second half.
Semenyo struck again shortly after the restart to give Manchester City a two-goal advantage. Sunderland refused to surrender, though, and Brobbey completed his hat-trick in the 59th minute to reduce the deficit to 4-3.
With Sunderland continuing to threaten, City needed a decisive moment to finally settle the contest. That arrived in the 81st minute when Erling Haaland converted Joško Gvardiol’s cross. The goal was initially ruled out for offside before a VAR review overturned the decision and confirmed the strike.
The goal was significant for Haaland because Sunderland had been the only Premier League side he had previously faced without scoring against. His late effort therefore completed an unusual personal milestone while securing three points for City.
Despite the victory, the performance has prompted discussion about Manchester City’s defending. Sunderland scored three times and repeatedly found opportunities against the home side, while Brobbey caused considerable problems for City’s back line.
Maresca himself acknowledged after the match that he would have preferred a more controlled victory. Reuters reported that the City manager was particularly concerned by the ease with which some of Sunderland’s goals were conceded, despite being pleased with his team’s attacking output.
The result nevertheless keeps Manchester City at the top of the Premier League with a perfect record from their opening five matches. They went into the international break three points clear of Arsenal, while Sunderland were left to reflect on an impressive attacking display that ultimately produced no points.
For Sunderland, Brobbey’s performance was one of the biggest positives. His three goals made him the first Sunderland player since Jermain Defoe in 2016 to score a Premier League hat-trick, although the Dutch striker left the Etihad without the reward of victory.
The 5-3 scoreline has therefore continued to generate debate for two very different reasons: Manchester City’s extraordinary attacking firepower and the defensive vulnerability that allowed Sunderland to remain in the contest until the closing stages.
With the international break now providing Maresca with time to assess his team, the next few weeks could offer an opportunity for City to address those defensive concerns while maintaining the attacking momentum that has carried them to five wins from five.
