Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has offered his assessment of the controversial decision to rule out Igor Jesus’ late equaliser during Nottingham Forest’s 1-0 defeat to Coventry City.
Forest appeared to have rescued a point at the City Ground when Jesus found the net in the 86th minute. However, referee Jarred Gillett was sent to the pitchside monitor following a VAR review, and the goal was eventually overturned for a foul on Coventry midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi.
The decision immediately sparked frustration among the home supporters, who believed Forest had scored a legitimate equaliser. The incident became one of the main talking points from a match in which Forest dominated possession of the attacking moments but ultimately failed to find a goal that counted.
According to the account in the referenced report, Gallagher challenged the VAR interpretation and explained why he believed there were two key reasons the goal could have been allowed to stand.
The controversy centred on Jesus making contact with Yirenkyi during the build-up. VAR determined that the Forest forward had stepped on the Coventry player’s foot and caused him to stumble before the ball reached Jesus.
The Premier League Match Centre subsequently explained that Jesus had committed a foul because he “steps on the foot” of Yirenkyi and trips him, leading to the original goal being overturned.
However, the incident has generated debate because the contact was relatively close to the moment Jesus completed the move, with supporters questioning whether it was sufficient to overturn the on-field decision.
The referee’s initial decision had been to award the goal, but VAR intervention changed the outcome after Gillett reviewed the footage at the monitor.
For Forest, the decision was particularly damaging because Coventry’s Jay Dasilva had given the visitors the lead in the second half. The Sky Blues held on to secure a historic 1-0 victory, their first Premier League win since April 2001.
Forest had 26 attempts during the match but managed only three efforts on target, while the late VAR decision ensured they finished the game without scoring.
The controversy has also revived wider discussions about the threshold for VAR intervention. The system is intended to correct clear and obvious errors rather than automatically overturn every debatable decision, making the judgement surrounding the Jesus incident particularly significant.
Gallagher’s intervention has therefore provided another perspective on a decision that divided opinion at the City Ground. While the official explanation supports the VAR overturn, the former referee’s analysis has given Forest supporters further grounds to question whether the contact should have been considered serious enough to cancel the goal.
For Oliver Glasner’s side, the immediate concern will be turning their attacking pressure into goals. Forest have now suffered another frustrating home result, while Coventry leave the City Ground with three points and a landmark Premier League victory.
The Igor Jesus incident, however, is likely to remain one of the most debated moments from the match, with the contrasting views over the VAR decision ensuring that the argument surrounding the disallowed equaliser continues.
