Nottingham Forest were left frustrated by another controversial VAR decision during their 1-0 Premier League defeat to Coventry City at the City Ground.
Forest appeared to have rescued a point late in the match when Igor Jesus found the back of the net in the 86th minute. However, referee Jarred Gillett was advised to review the incident by VAR before overturning his original decision.
The decision centred on contact between Jesus and Coventry midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi in the build-up. After reviewing the footage at the pitchside monitor, Gillett concluded that Jesus had committed a foul before scoring, meaning the equaliser was ruled out.
The decision proved decisive as Coventry held on for a famous 1-0 victory, securing their first Premier League win in 25 years. Jay Dasilva had earlier scored Coventry’s winning goal in the 55th minute after controlling Carl Rushworth’s long pass before producing an excellent finish.
The ruling sparked considerable discussion among Forest supporters, with many questioning whether the contact between the two players was sufficient to justify overturning the goal.
However, the former Premier League referee referenced in the report is understood to have rejected the suggestion that Forest were unfairly treated by the officials. His assessment was that the decisive incident should not be viewed simply as a refereeing error, with the contact in the build-up considered relevant to the final decision.
The controversy was particularly significant because Forest had struggled to create clear chances despite registering 26 shots, with only three finding the target. The late goal appeared to have given them an opportunity to escape with a point before VAR intervened.
Coventry manager Frank Lampard welcomed the intervention, joking that he “loved VAR” after the decision went in his team’s favour. He later explained that he believed Jesus had caught Yirenkyi and that the contact had caused the Coventry player to lose his balance.
For Forest manager Oliver Glasner, the defeat added to the frustration surrounding his team’s performances at the City Ground. Forest have now failed to score in their opening three home league matches this season, while the VAR controversy provided another major talking point after the final whistle.
The result also gave Coventry a historic victory after their difficult opening to the campaign. Having lost their first four league matches without scoring, Lampard’s side finally found the breakthrough they needed and defended their advantage until the final whistle.
With the international break now approaching, Forest will have time to analyse both their performance and the controversial VAR decision. The incident is likely to remain a major talking point among supporters, particularly given the narrow margin between a defeat and what would have been a valuable home point.
