FA Set To Take Action Against West Ham After Violent Dockers Derby Clash With Millwall

West Ham United could face disciplinary action from the Football Association following the heated scenes surrounding their Championship clash with Millwall at The Den.

The highly anticipated Dockers Derby returned on Saturday for the first time in 14 years, with both teams involved in an intense 2-2 draw. The match was played in a hostile atmosphere, with police deploying additional measures because of the fixture’s high-risk status.

On the pitch, Millwall raced into a two-goal lead through Caleb Taylor and Camiel Neghli before West Ham produced a dramatic second-half comeback.

Mohamadou Kanté pulled one goal back with a long-range effort before Konstantinos Mavropanos headed home a late equaliser to rescue a point for Nuno Espírito Santo’s side.

However, the football was overshadowed by incidents involving players and supporters.

One of the biggest talking points was an allegation that West Ham forward Taty Castellanos spat at Millwall goalkeeper Filip Marschall during the second half. Millwall reportedly lodged a formal complaint over the incident, while both managers confirmed after the game that they were aware of the allegation. Neither manager said they had personally witnessed it.

Castellanos could face further disciplinary proceedings if the allegation is supported by video evidence. Under FA regulations, proven spitting offences can result in a significant suspension.

The match also saw West Ham reduced to 10 men when Kanté was shown a red card after bringing down Kyrell Lisbie as the Millwall forward appeared to be through on goal. The visitors subsequently had to defend their point with 10 players during the closing stages.

While there has been considerable reaction to the conduct surrounding the derby, it is important to distinguish between confirmed disciplinary action and potential sanctions.

The FA’s disciplinary framework allows serious misconduct to result in sanctions, while points deductions can be imposed in cases involving repeated serious misconduct. However, a points deduction is not automatically imposed simply because an incident involving violent conduct occurs.

The FA’s Laws of the Game define violent conduct as using or attempting to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent or another person when not challenging for the ball. The rules also cover aggressive physical behaviour involving players, officials and spectators.

As a result, any punishment involving West Ham would depend on the evidence gathered and the specific findings of the relevant disciplinary process.

For now, the 2-2 draw means West Ham remain near the top of the Championship after their strong opening run, while Millwall earned a point in one of English football’s most fiercely contested local rivalries.

The biggest story away from the scoreline, however, remains the disciplinary questions surrounding the match. If further evidence emerges from the alleged incidents, West Ham and the individuals involved could face action from the FA.
