Roberto De Zerbi Calls Tottenham “Too Fragile” After Aston Villa Defeat As His Full-Time Decision Sparks Debate

Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi admitted that his team were “too fragile” after Spurs suffered a 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa at home.

The result added to Tottenham’s difficult start to the campaign, with Villa taking control of the contest after scoring three times before the hosts mounted a late response.

Johan Manzambi opened the scoring before Nicolas Jackson doubled Aston Villa’s advantage in the second half. Emiliano Buendia then produced another decisive moment to put the visitors 3-0 ahead and leave Tottenham facing a huge deficit.

Spurs eventually found a way back onto the scoresheet through Conor Gallagher, whose effort took a deflection on its way into the net.

Jan Paul van Hecke added another late goal, but Tottenham had left themselves with far too much ground to make up and Villa held on for the victory.

De Zerbi’s Full-Time Decision Sparks Criticism

De Zerbi’s actions immediately after the final whistle became another talking point following the defeat.

After exchanging handshakes with Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, the Tottenham boss headed straight down the tunnel rather than remaining on the pitch with his players.

There were boos from sections of the home support inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as frustration grew following another match without a Premier League victory.

A number of Tottenham supporters subsequently criticised De Zerbi online for not staying behind to acknowledge the fans alongside his players.

Some supporters had already begun leaving the stadium after Villa established a 3-0 lead in the 83rd minute, but the manager’s decision still attracted attention.

The situation could become even more concerning for Spurs if Fulham and Coventry both win their respective matches, as Tottenham could potentially finish the weekend at the bottom of the Premier League table.

De Zerbi Admits Tottenham Were Too Fragile

Speaking after the match, De Zerbi acknowledged that Tottenham had created opportunities but failed to take advantage of them.

The Italian felt Spurs should have been ahead during the opening half after producing several promising attacking moments.

However, he also accepted responsibility for the team’s failure to convert those chances and criticised their defensive concentration.

De Zerbi explained that Tottenham needed to remain more focused when defending after conceding the opening goal.

He was particularly disappointed by the way his team conceded Villa’s second goal from a goal-kick situation, while Buendia’s third was described as an outstanding finish.

Despite Tottenham’s positive spells with the ball, De Zerbi stressed that possession alone is not enough to win football matches.

The manager believes his players must become more resilient during the moments when they are required to defend, compete physically and deal with pressure.

His message was clear: Tottenham need to improve both the quality of their football and their ability to remain strong throughout the entire 90 minutes.

For De Zerbi, the defeat was not simply about Tottenham failing to score when they had opportunities. He also believes the team must become more disciplined and dependable without the ball.

The Italian now faces the task of addressing those weaknesses quickly, with pressure likely to increase if Tottenham’s poor run continues.
