adminFormer Premier League referee Mike Dean has given his verdict on the controversial officiating decision that denied Wolverhampton Wanderers a dramatic late equaliser against West Ham United.
The incident occurred during West Ham’s 2-1 victory over Wolves at Molineux, where Gary O’Neil’s side thought they had rescued a point deep into stoppage time.
Wolves had fallen behind after Pablo Sarabia converted from the penalty spot, before Lucas Paqueta levelled for West Ham from another penalty. James Ward-Prowse then put the visitors ahead when his corner went directly into the net.
However, the biggest talking point came in the closing stages.
Max Kilman appeared to have headed Wolves level nine minutes into added time after connecting with a corner. The celebrations were short-lived, though, as VAR intervened and the goal was ruled out because Tawanda Chirewa was considered to be in an offside position and interfering with the goalkeeper.
The decision immediately sparked debate, with former Celtic manager Neil Lennon describing it as an unbelievable call during his appearance on Sky Sports.
Dean was also asked to assess the incident and explained why the officials ultimately disallowed the goal.
According to the former referee, Chirewa was positioned directly in front of the goalkeeper and affected the goalkeeper’s ability to see Kilman’s header.
Dean acknowledged that the rule could appear strange but argued that, based on the laws of the game, the decision could be justified.
“It’s a strange rule, but he is standing right in front of the goalkeeper,” Dean explained.
He pointed out that Kilman was directly in front of the Wolves player when the header was made, while the goalkeeper’s view of the ball was obstructed.
Dean therefore concluded that the offside decision was consistent with the wording of the laws, despite the frustration it caused Wolves.
The ruling was particularly painful for O’Neil and his players because the goal would have dramatically changed the outcome of the match.
The Wolves manager was visibly unhappy at the final whistle and confronted referee Tony Harrington to express his frustration.
For West Ham, however, the decision ensured they held on to all three points.
The victory was also significant for David Moyes, who had been under increasing pressure following a difficult run of results. The Hammers moved level on points with Manchester United in sixth place after the win.
The controversy surrounding Kilman’s disallowed goal is likely to continue generating debate among supporters, particularly over how much interference should be required before an offside player is considered to have affected a goalkeeper.
Dean’s assessment, however, was clear: while the rule may appear harsh, he believed the officials had grounds to disallow the goal because of Chirewa’s position in front of the goalkeeper.
The incident once again highlighted the complicated nature of VAR decisions and how seemingly small positional details can determine whether a crucial late goal stands or is overturned.
