Paul Merson Launches Brutal Tottenham Verdict After 5-1 Charlton Victory

Tottenham Hotspur may have produced a convincing 5-1 victory over Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup, but Paul Merson has refused to be impressed by the result, with the Sky Sports pundit reportedly suggesting that Spurs were fortunate and that the scoreline flattered Roberto De Zerbi’s side.

Tottenham desperately needed a response after their disappointing Premier League defeat, and they delivered it in emphatic fashion. Spurs found the net five times, with Mikey Moore, Dominic Solanke, Kevin Danso and debutant Sávio among those making an impact.

Yet while Tottenham supporters celebrated, Merson offered a completely different interpretation of the performance.

Speaking about the game, Merson’s verdict was brutally dismissive: “Tottenham only got lucky.” The former Arsenal star reportedly argued that the result should not be used as evidence that Tottenham have suddenly solved the problems that have affected them.

According to Merson’s assessment, Spurs benefited enormously from the circumstances of the match. Charlton rotated heavily for the cup encounter, giving Tottenham considerably more space and time than they would normally receive against a strong Premier League opponent.

“You can’t look at 5-1 and suddenly say Tottenham are back,” Merson’s argument effectively suggests. “Who were they playing? Charlton. This is completely different when you face a top Premier League side.”

That criticism comes despite Tottenham producing some genuinely impressive moments.

Mikey Moore looked dangerous, Dominic Solanke found the net and the defence was considerably more comfortable than it had been in the previous league fixture. However, Merson reportedly believes those positives have to be judged against the level of opposition.

“Tottenham had everything go their way,” the pundit is understood to have argued. “They got the early goal, Charlton opened up and suddenly Tottenham were playing with confidence. That’s what happens when things fall into place.”

He also questioned whether Spurs would have been able to maintain the same level of attacking freedom against a side capable of pressing them more aggressively.

“Let’s see them do it against Liverpool,” Merson reportedly added. “That’s when you’ll know where Tottenham really are. Charlton aren’t going to tell you whether this Tottenham team can challenge the big teams.”

Merson’s comments have naturally created debate among Tottenham supporters, particularly because of Sávio’s impressive debut.

The Brazilian winger came off the bench and immediately injected energy into the Tottenham attack. His pace, direct running and confidence caused Charlton problems, while his goal provided one of the standout moments of the night.

But even Sávio’s impressive performance did not appear to convince Merson that Tottenham’s problems have disappeared.

“Sávio looks exciting, but let’s not get carried away,” was the essence of Merson’s argument. “You have to see him do it when the pressure is really on and defenders don’t give him that much space.”

The former Arsenal midfielder also reportedly questioned Tottenham’s mentality.

After the defeat in the Premier League, Spurs needed a reaction, and they got one against Charlton. However, Merson believes responding against lower-level opposition is considerably easier than producing the same reaction when the stakes are higher.

“The real Tottenham will be judged in the Premier League,” he argued. “A cup game against a rotated Championship team is not where you find out whether this team has changed.”

That is where Merson’s criticism becomes particularly significant.

Tottenham’s next major challenges will provide a much clearer indication of whether De Zerbi has genuinely turned things around. The club cannot afford to rely on comfortable cup victories if they want to compete consistently at the highest level.

The Carabao Cup draw has already presented Tottenham with a major test, with Liverpool waiting in the next round. That match could give Spurs an immediate opportunity to answer Merson’s criticism.

If Tottenham produce another dominant performance against Liverpool, Merson’s “only got lucky” argument will look increasingly difficult to defend.

But if Spurs struggle once again against stronger opposition, his warning that the Charlton result was misleading could gain even more weight.

For now, Tottenham fans can celebrate a much-needed victory and an extremely promising debut from Sávio. However, Merson has made it clear that, in his eyes, the 5-1 scoreline has not changed the bigger picture.

“Don’t judge Tottenham on Charlton,” his message effectively was. “Judge them when they play the teams they’re expected to compete with.”

And that is precisely where De Zerbi and his players must now provide the answer.
