While Mikey Moore delivered another encouraging performance, scoring the opening goal and contributing an assist, it was new signing Sávio who ultimately stole much of the spotlight after coming off the bench.
The Brazilian winger needed very little time to make his presence felt. Introduced in the second half, Sávio immediately looked dangerous, showing the pace, confidence and directness that Tottenham supporters have been hoping to see from their attacking players.
His impact was remarkable. Within minutes of entering the game, the former Manchester City winger had helped create a goal before producing a spectacular individual effort of his own to put Spurs firmly in control.
Sávio’s goal was arguably the moment of the night. Picking up the ball on the right, he drove forward with purpose, skipped past defenders and finished emphatically to send the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium into celebration.
The performance immediately sparked comparisons with the qualities Tottenham previously enjoyed from Son Heung-min.
Son became synonymous with explosive pace, direct running and the ability to create something from seemingly nothing. Although it would be premature to place such expectations on Sávio after just one appearance, his debut offered an exciting glimpse of what he could eventually bring to De Zerbi’s attack.
Sávio Provides Something Different
What particularly impressed supporters was Sávio’s willingness to attack defenders.
Rather than constantly recycling possession, the Brazilian looked eager to receive the ball and immediately move towards goal. His acceleration and close control made him extremely difficult for Charlton to contain.
That directness could prove especially valuable for Tottenham as the season develops.
The club have endured periods where their attacking play has lacked penetration, but Sávio’s arrival gives De Zerbi another player capable of changing the game through individual quality.
Mikey Moore also deserves enormous credit for his contribution. The academy graduate opened the scoring in the 41st minute before continuing to cause problems throughout the match.
However, Sávio’s late cameo demonstrated that Tottenham may now have another exciting attacking option capable of pushing Moore and the rest of the squad for regular minutes.
A Warning to Tottenham’s Rivals
The 5-1 victory was important for Tottenham after their disappointing Premier League opening defeat to Brentford, but the emergence of Sávio could prove even more significant.
The Brazilian’s performance suggested that he is already comfortable playing with the freedom required to influence matches.
De Zerbi will understandably want to avoid placing too much pressure on the youngster, but the early signs are extremely encouraging.
Tottenham have invested heavily in their squad and will expect their new arrivals to make an immediate difference. Against Charlton, Sávio showed exactly why Spurs were prepared to make a major investment in him.
There is still a long way to go before he can genuinely be compared with Son’s Tottenham legacy. Nevertheless, if his debut is any indication, Spurs may have found a player capable of becoming one of the club’s next attacking stars.
For now, Tottenham fans can simply enjoy the excitement.
Sávio has arrived, and after just one appearance, the Brazilian has already given supporters plenty of reasons to believe that something special could be developing in north London.
