Hoffenheim travelled to North London hoping to provide Spurs with a demanding final test, but Tottenham produced another confident display and continued to build momentum before the league opener.
Richarlison gave the hosts the lead after calmly finishing Andy Robertson’s delivery, while Mikey Moore then took centre stage after the break, scoring twice to complete a comfortable victory for Tottenham.
However, despite another encouraging team performance, one player in particular appeared to send a serious warning to Tottenham’s Premier League rivals.
Sandro Tonali sends Premier League warning
Tottenham’s spending this summer has attracted plenty of attention, with questions raised over whether the club paid too much to bring Sandro Tonali to North London.
His display against Hoffenheim, however, offered a strong indication of why Spurs were prepared to make such a major investment.
The Italy international was outstanding in midfield, combining tireless energy with excellent technical ability. Tonali influenced proceedings in both possession and without the ball, demonstrating exactly what he can bring to De Zerbi’s side.
He completed three passes into the final third and made four defensive contributions, underlining his ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch.
At several points, Tonali appeared to be operating at another level to his opponents. He controlled the tempo, carried the ball forward and consistently looked to push Tottenham onto the front foot.
His display earned him an impressive 9/10 rating, and if he can maintain this level once competitive football begins, Premier League midfielders could have a major problem on their hands.
For Tottenham supporters, Tonali’s performance represents another reason for optimism. For Hoffenheim and Spurs’ future league opponents, it may already be an early warning of what is coming.
Marcos Senesi endures difficult outing
While Tonali dominated the headlines, Marcos Senesi experienced a far less convincing evening.
The Argentine knows he faces stiff competition for a starting place, particularly with Micky van de Ven among Tottenham’s defensive options, making every pre-season opportunity important.
Unfortunately for Senesi, his performance against Hoffenheim failed to make the desired impact.
Although Tottenham kept a clean sheet, Senesi lost five duels, committed one foul and was dribbled past twice. It was a difficult individual showing despite the team’s overall success.
Thankfully for Spurs, Jan Paul van Hecke delivered a strong performance alongside him and helped prevent Hoffenheim from converting their opportunities into goals.
